10 Badass Female G.I. Joe Characters

The Women Warriors of GI Joe

By Kurt Anthony Krug     July 31, 2009

In the G.I. Joe universe, Joe and Cobra are dominated by males—it’s a virtual sausage party. There may well be over 300 characters, but only one-tenth of them are women (canon or non-canon), giving the Joe-verse a healthy dose of estrogen. And as you know, when it comes to girls, we here at Mania feel it’s our duty to rank them—it’s our job. So here they are—the top 10 badass chicks of the G.I. Joe world.

Real Name: Jodie Craig Shooter was mentioned in the very first issue of G.I. Joe--there’s a panel of the name and mug shots of every original Joe team member. Shooter’s mentioned but her face is obscured. This was originally writer Larry Hama’s in-joke to then-Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter.

When Hama wrote G.I. Joe: Declassified over 20 years later, readers saw Shooter for the first time--a very clever and creative way to turn an in-joke into something more. Shooter was so deep undercover, many Joes didn’t even know she existed. Her cover was a non-commissioned officer at the chaplain’s assistants school. Her many honors include a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, the Air Medal, a Combat Infantryman’s Badge, as well as an Expert Rifleman’s Badge. In her spare time, she worked with disabled children. Shooter was the sniper who saved Stalker’s unit in Sierra Gordo.

Memorable Moment: Dying at the conclusion of the “Lady Doomsday” mission.

First appearance: (name mentioned and face obscured): G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #1 (Marvel); (first full appearance): G.I. Joe: Declassified #1 (Devil’s Due).

Real Name: Daina (last name unknown)

If the Oktober Guard is the Russian version of G.I. Joe, Daina is their version of Scarlett. A skilled pilot and sniper, Daina is a surviving member of the Guard.

Memorable Moment: Joining G.I. Joe.

First appearance: G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #6 (Marvel)

Real Name: Dela Eden

A member of the Red Shadows, a covert paramilitary organization that hates Cobra and G.I. Joe, Dela Eden murdered Lady Jaye. She also shot and badly wounded Cobra Commander.

Memorable Moment: Murdering Lady Jaye.

First Appearance: G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #41 (Devil’s Due)

Real Name: Michelle LaChance

Firewall was imprisoned for hacking classified Pentagon files. However, that earned her a spot on the Joes. Her loyalty is without question.

Memorable Moment: Becoming the Joes’ go-to computer expert after Mainframe’s death.

First Appearance: G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #1 (Devil’s Due)

Real Name: Zoe (last name unknown)

The younger sister of Zartan and Zandar’s twin, Zarana is a master of disguise just like her brothers. She’s also high up in the Dreadnoks chain of command, even was second-in-command of Cobra for a time.

Memorable Moment: Hijacking a Joe transport plane.

First Appearance: G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #50 (Marvel)

Real Name: Courtney Krieger

A former fashion model, Cover Girl grew bored with the profession and joined the military, becoming the Wolverine driver for G.I. Joe. She and fellow Joe, Shipwreck, are an item much to the amazement of other Joes.

Memorable moment: Disabling a bio-weapon in Manhattan.

First Appearance: G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #16 (Marvel)

Real Name: Kimi Arashikage

Jinx came from the Arashikage ninja clan that produced Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes--‘nuff said! She and Budo, a fellow Joe, are lovers, despite their backgrounds (he’s a samurai and she’s a ninja).

Memorable Moment: Battling Zartan and rogue ninjas with her cousin Storm Shadow.

First Appearance: G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #59 (Marvel)

Real Name: Alison Hart-Burnett Faireborn

The second main female of the Joes, Lady Jaye and Flint are one of the most famous couples in the Joe-verse. Their romance is one of the few things the comic and cartoon had in common. The two eventually get married. In the Transformers cartoon continuity, she and Flint have a daughter named Marissa Faireborn.

Memorable Moment: Besides beating up Flint, Lady Jaye pummeled Zarana badly.

First Appearance: G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #32 (Marvel)

Real Name: Baroness Anastasia DeCobray

Who can resist this femme fatale in tight leather and librarian glasses? Destro can’t. Even Flint has an undeniable chemistry with her. Cobra Commander’s lieutenant, Baroness is as beautiful as she is deadly. She and Scarlett have slugged it out several times.

Memorable Moment: Capturing Snake-Eyes and shooting Scarlett in the head point blank.

First Appearance: G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #1 (Marvel)

Real Name: Shana O’Hara

“Beauty may only be skin deep, but lethal is to the bone.” This describes Scarlett, the first--and most popular--female Joe. A deadly martial artist and intelligence agent, Scarlett is the beloved of Snake-Eyes, the flagship character of the Joe-verse.

Memorable Moment: Her romance with Snake-Eyes has spawned many great stories and character moments to narrow it down to one.

First Appearance: G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #1 (Marvel)

I don't know how Baronness is not 1st.  I just always had a thing for her as a kid

Myrdinn 7/31/2009 6:36:19 AM

Because... she's not the redhead.

For some reason I keep thinking about the cartoon.  I couldn't stand Scarlett.  Her outfit was horrendous.  Barroness was always changing outfits, dressing up in disguises.  Had that Awesome accent. Skintight Black Leather.  Best of all, She was the "Bad Girl" as well.

wth? im not a big follower of the comic storyline, but as a kid of the cartoons, i kind of remember Scarlett was with Duke wasn't she?

Chadghostal 7/31/2009 10:12:24 AM

Lady Jaye was above and beyond the most badass female Joe, if not Joe in general. Scarlett has spent of ton of time being captured by Cobra and having Snake-Eyes rescue her. As where there were tons of great stand alone Lady Jaye stories that showed just how tough she was in her own right. Also the issues she and Flint spent behind enemy lines showed why she was also dating the biggest bad ass in all G.I.JOE.

Chad, your Fing mad, Lady Jaye was the worst and most annoying of them all.  Along with that GAY ASS Flint, her character made no sense and was stupid!!!

"Her many honors include a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, the Air Medal, a Combat Infantryman’s Badge, as well as an Expert Rifleman’s Badge"

Jesus do these people ever even ASK a real military person anything?? Half of these medals women cannot, and never have been eligible for. FFS....

I can't believe LADY JAYE is not in the new mobie.  Always thought she was hot too.  I have to say that Scarlet in the new movie looks amazing.  Now I've always liked Sienna Miller, and think she makes a great Baroness, but wow look at Rachel Nichols.  Me Likey.

As for realism, who cares GIJew, just think of it as an alternate universe or it's going to bug you.

I liked the list and have to agree with the rankings. If your a fan of just the cartoons , you have missed out on some of the best versions of the ladies, If you think the Baroness is a bad ass you have to see her slaughtering people when she s out for revenge, whenshe thinks her baby was killed. Pure evil. Also those people who hammered Lady Jaye, there again check her out in the books , before she was killed. she kicked ass.  However my girl is still Scarlett she Is as BAD ASS  as her man , taking on ninjas, cobra and Dreadnaughts alike, and giving them the SHAFT, of the arrows, pervs

oh yeah, before I go FLINT is one of the best charcters, next to Snake Eyes, and boy when they killed Jaye, he was out for blood and he got some. Shotty style

GIJew, I'm with you.  I don't even know how you'd earn both an Air Medal AND a CIB.  lol

However, to go with almostunbiased's comment, I have to say that if THAT bothers you, I hope you have NO plans to see the movie.  Every time the commercial is on I almost have a stroke just seeing how Dennis Quaid wears his beret.
