I could have sworn that The Funhouse has been remade.

The problem with remaking several of these movies is that part of what made these movies special was the combination of actors, the time in which they were made, etc.  A remake of Phibes is just not going to work because you don't have Vincent Price, and I doubt anyone could capture the dark humor about it (how could they ever equal the sight gag of the police trying to free the man impaled on a spiral unicorn horn?)  LIkewise, with The Legend of Hell House, there's just something about the feel of the film that make that film special.  And, as the attempted reboot proved, The Night Stalker without Darren McGavin just doesn't work.

Of the ones I listed here, I would say Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things (which I've never heard of) is a good candidate, as are M and The Black Cat (count me in as thinking Paul Reubens for the Peter Lorre role is an interesting idea).

I do have one objection to the comments about Freaks, though.  How were these people exploited?  The film makes them the good guys, and it provided employment to people who otherwise would have a hard time providing for themselves.

Uh Rosemary’s Baby does not need to be touched. It's a true classic that needs to be appreciated as it is.

Again, great list. Makes me want to smoke and drink scotch for some reason.

Ugh! Why can't people just appreciate what's already there?!?! Most of these movies are classics. Why do we need remakes? Can't Hollywood find other, untapped, resources to make movies from? Some movies need remakes, but I don't understand when people say, "That movie is a classic. It should be remade." That doesn't make any sense to me!!

Remaking these movies wouldn't add anything different to the discourse of what is already there. It would just muddy up the waters.

Saw the sequel to Reanimator on Fearnet. The chick was hot, the film was not.
