10 Cool Products Not Toys at Toy Fair 2012

It isn’t all about toys it seems

By Robert T. Trate     February 18, 2012

Toy Fair is starting to resemble Comic Con in many fashions. It isn’t all about the comics at Comic Con anymore. Toy Fair is also becoming a big marketing tool for the studios as well. There are other releases and debuts for products that have ties to the entertainment industry. T-shirts, glasses, flash drives, kitchen ware, and even DVD Box sets are now premiering at Toy Fair. Check out these “10 Cool Products” that you’ll want to get your hands on.

10. Back to the Future 2 Hoverboard

All right, so you will need additional power for it to work on water. Mattel is finally going to deliver a Hoverboard and the future will be in your hands. If only it actually worked. The Back to the Future 2 Hoverboard is available for pre-order March 1st through the 20th on MattyCollector.

9. Mimobot Transformer Flash Drives

Let your geek light really shine with one or both of these designer drives by Mimobot. It’s practical, cool, and clearly not a toy. It just happens to be a great reminder of one.

8. Doctor Who Glass Ware

The rest of the world has pint glasses featuring their favorite teams. Isn’t time we have pint glasses featuring the Doctor? The Doctor Who glasses are by Bif Bang Pow and arrive before the end of time (no release date yet).

7. Freddy Puppet

We don’t see too many kids actually using the Freddy Puppet from A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors as toy. We do see the Freddy Puppet getting promptly displayed around the home every Halloween starting this fall. The Freddy Puppet is available from NECA in September.

6. Dead Pool Pencil Cup Accessory

Here is a great way to display the head of your favorite “Merc with a Mouth” and actually use it for something too. Look for the Dead Pool Pencil Cup from Diamond Select Toys this spring.

5. The Alien Egg Pod and Big Chap Molds

Kotobukiya took their Han in Carbonite and R2D2 ice molds and applied it to several other great properties. The Alien Egg Pod looks great and a perfect thing to make some fun Easter candy out of. These are available now to order at Entertainment Earth.

4. Batman The Dark Knight Rises Statue

Kotobukiya has yet another incredible statue coming in the 3rd quarter of 2012. Here is the prototype for the Batman The Dark Knight Rises ARTFX statue.

3. Walking Dead Season 2 Special Edition Blu-ray Case

It doesn’t seem completely practical and it will take up some shelf space. Come on though, you have to admit turning the screw driver into the eye of the zombie is a great way to get your Blu-rays out. The design by McFarlane Toys is incredible, let us just hope the second season has an ending that warrants such a case.

2. Jakks Ultra-Vision Glasses

This one could be technically called a toy if we only we couldn’t think of 100 other fun uses for it. Jakks Pacific has an incredible line of SpyNet gear (see link) and their new Ultra-Vision Glasses seem to be the crème de la crème. They can record 20 minutes of video. Have multiple vision settings and allow you to see 50 feet. All in the price range of $59.99 to $69.99!

1. GI Joe Retaliation Gear

It seems as if ninjas will be the key factor in GI Joe: Retaliation. The figures look great but it was this hooded sweatshirt and messenger bag that immediately caught our attention. We’ve always wanted Arashikage Clan gear and this year we are going to get it.

A word of warning about the SpyNet Gear by Jakks Pacific it's all crap. Not worth the price. I bought my niece's kids a bunch of night vision googles for christmas and none of them worked. I had to go through the hassle of shipping them all back to Amazon. Even though return shipping was free it was still a pain in the ass to box them all back up and haul them to the local UPS store.

Love the Doctor Who pint glasses.  They will be mine.  I just hope there's more of the Doctor themed glasses than just Four and Eleven.
