Christian Bale as Dirty Harry?  Umm...I hope not.  I'd rather see Thomas Jane if a reboot/remake is ever done, but I suppose the role would be too similar to Frank Castle.  Maybe Viggo Mortenson?

Don't even think about rebooting Dirty Harry!   Clint Eastwood is Dirty Harry.  No other actor could or should play him.  The same goes for Steve McQueen in Bullitt.  He was that character.  Leave those characters alone.

As someone mentioned, seems like this Sherlock is alot closer to what Doyle wrote than anything we have seen before.

If you want to talk forgotten yet great detectives.....
COLUMBO!!!!
Dude, he is the polar opposite of Monk.
As a matter of fact, a Monk meets Columbo movie would be a scream!

But I digress..

Perry Mason would be a good reboot, although as a TV series.
And if you want to talk westerns, how about Paladin from Have Gun, Will Travel??
Original western detective....

@creekwoodkid-Hollywood is supposed to be working on that...

Hey, while not a true detective but very much in the spirit where is my Fletch relaunch dammit? Granted the sequel kinda crippled it for a while but Fletcher needs the chance to shine again. I heard Kevin Smith has been trying, but it doesn't seem to ever get past the pitch stage.

I would love to see Philip Marlowe rebooted. I just read The Big Sleep and it was great. They had to leave so many juicy plot points out of the 1940's version  that it's no wonder  the movie didn't make any sense. (It's still a great film, though)

I wouldn't say he's a hard drinker or that he's a womanizer. He plies other people with drinks and he's not immune to women, but he doesn't like corruption or double dealing, so he doesn't really like the women that end up on his cases. He's tall, good looking and only 33 years old. I'm not sure who would make a good Marlowe. It's got to be someone who can play the straight man among the crazies with some style and toughness. Someone who looks good in a cheap suit.

Josh Holloway, maybe? He could play the good guy living on the edge of corruption but not quite falling in.

I actually thought I heard something a while back about a Hardy Boys movie with Tom Cruise and Ben Stiller playing them

most posters may not be familiar with Charlie Chan from the 20s-30s era, but he was an Asian sleuth and his movies were'nt box office hits. But they were cult hits
