10 Out of the Box Characters for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Lesser known agents and villains for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

No one knows what to expect from Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.   While we know it will tie-in with the Avengers film the expectation is that it will feature new or perhaps lesser known characters from the Marvel Universe.  Likely it will be similar to Smallville, looking to go off on its own with new characters but incorporating more comic book elements from the Marvel Universe along the way.  To that end, Mania has comprised a list of 10 S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents/heroes and villains we would like to see incorporated into the show.  These are not major names but rather second or even third tier characters that would fit nicely into the show without compromising Marvel’s big screen films.  They are also characters whose powers would fit easier within the scope of a TV show without the need for major special effects to pull off.  In addition, we have provided ideas for casting choices for these roles.

AGENTS/HEROES

Tony Masters, The Taskmaster

Introduced in Avengers # 195 (1980), Masters has the ability to mimic the physical movements of any person he observes.  Thus he could observe an Olympic level gymnast and then perform their exact movements.  While appearing as a villain to help train agents in criminal organizations, the Taskmaster would later be revealed to be a C sleeper agent planted by Nick Fury. Portrayed by: Adrian Paul (Highlander)

Clay Quartermain

Clay Quartermain has been a fixture in S.H.I.E.L.D.  since first appearing in Strange Tales #163 way back in 1967.  Quatermain was liaison to General "Thunderbolt" Ross' "Hulkbusters" military program.  Later he became head of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Paranormal Containment Unit. Portrayed by: Colin Ferguson (Eureka)

Jack Truman, Deathlok

Jack Truman was the third character to be known as the Cyborg Deathlok.  The character debuted in the Deathlok mini-series in 1999.  Truman was already a S.H.I.E.L.D.  Agent when he was badly injured during a mission and turned into a cyborg to fight The Red Skull. Portrayed by: Harry Lennix (Dollhouse)

Bobbi Morse, Mockingbird
First appearing in Astonishing Tales #6 (1971), Bobbi Morse was the one-time love interest of Clint Barton, AKA Hawkeye.  She and Hawkeye founded the West Coast Avengers.  Morse has no super powers but as an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.  she is an expert at hand-to-hand combat and skilled with various weapons. Portrayed by: Summer Glau (Firefly)

Wendell Vaughn, Quasar

Vaughn made his debut in Captain America #217 (1978) as Marvel Man and later changed his name to Quasar in Quasar #1 (1989).  Vaughn graduated from S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy prior to gaining the quantum bands which gave him his cosmic super powers.  However is connection with S.H.I.E.L.D. is as Security Chief at Project Pegasus.  Project Pegasus appeared briefly in the post credit scene in Thor as the location where the Cosmic Cube was being studied. Portrayed by: Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Galactica)

VILLAINS

Allesandro Brannex, The Super Adaptoid

The first Super Adaptoid appeared in Tales of Suspense #82 (1966) as an artificial construct capable of mimicking the super powers of various heroes.  The second Super Adaptoid takes the guise of Allesandro Brannex to become Chairman of the terrorist organization A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics). Portrayed by: Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica)

Marvin Flumm, Mentallo

Marvin Flumm debuted in Strange Tales #141 (1966) as a telepath recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. for their ESP Division.   Flumm attempted a takeover of S.H.I.E.L.D. with The Fixer but failed.  He was later recruited by the terrorist group and main S.H.I.E.L.D. nemesis HYDRA and became a division leader.  His telepathic powers are usually augmented by technology provided by The Fixer. Portrayed by: Colin Morgan (Merlin)

Paul Norbert Ebersol, The Fixer

Paul Norbert Ebersol, better known as the Fixer also made his first appearance in Strange Tales #141.  Ebersol is a mechanical genius and particularly adept at inventing new and deadly weapons and frequently works for HYDRA.  He built anti-gravity devices which allow him to fly.  The Fixer would transfer his mind into a more powerful robotic body. Portrayed by: Dallas Roberts (The Walking Dead)

Aleksander Lukin

Lukin first appeared in Captain American #1 (2004).  He was a Soviet general in the KGB and oversaw projects such as the Winter Soldier program.  Lukin utilized the Cosmic Cube to make his Kronas Corporation one of the most powerful on Earth which eventually took control of Roxxon Oil, the world’s largest conglomerate.  Lukin has ties to both HYDRA and A.I.M. and one abducted S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sharon Carter.  Portrayed by: John Hamm (Mad Men)

Whitney Frost, Madame Masque

Whitney is the daughter of Count Nefaria, the head of a powerful Maggia family (Marvel’s version of the Mafia).  Her face was badly scarred in plane crash resulting in her wearing a gold mask on her face and adopting the code name Madame Masque.  Masque has been a frequent foe of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Iron Man.  She is a master strategist and organizer, although she suffers from mental instability and is believed to be criminally insane. Portrayed by: Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse)

For once I agree with your casting choices.  Except I always pictured Jonathan Frakes as Fixer, but probably too old now.

I like most of your picks however I always thought of Fixer as a black guy, so I would have cast Hill Harper from CSI: NY for him. I would love to see Eliza Dushku as Madame Masque.

All good picks except Summer Glau, anorexic woman shouldn't be allowed on TV...not right for the Mockingbird parts IMO.

I am so out of the loop for regular characters in comics and specifically SHIELD. I'm familiar somewhat with a few of the characters but not most. I couldn't say who is right or wrong. Obviously, you couldn't get alot of the actors requested but this is the fun of casting like this. It is just fun. The only one that really stands out to me is Adrian Paul. I was a big Highlander fan and I'd love for his star to rise again so he can get great roles.

I read that a word that the show would use in place of "mutant" would be "gifteds."  Just like Heroes used the word "specials" to explain the Heroes abilities/powers. So I don't doubt that's what Whedon will use to explain Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver's abilities/powers.

How about instead of Jack Truman, they go with Billy Brown (The Following, Sons of Anarchy) or Mechad Brooks from True Blood, he was even in Dollhouse once so easy fit in the Whedon family.

I think Deathlok would be a no-go. Story is too similar to Robocop, and with that new remake coming out, no one is going to want that association in people's minds.

Summer Glau wouldn't really work since she's just been picked up for Arrow. If they're not going to use her for a Ms. Marvel movie, get Yvonne Strahovski for Mockingbird.

I don't see the Robocop film in any way deterring Marvel from using Deathlok..First off, Deathlok was around long before Robocop.  Secondly I don't see their stories as being all that similar beyond being turned into a cyborg.

I just love it that Colin Ferguson was mentioned...I miss Eureka big time.

I would want Taskmaster to be the guy that is training the villains, he is basically like a Marvel version of Deathstroke, yes even moreso than Deadpool!!!!
