10 Stephen King Novels That Would Make Great Comics

Halloween Week Part III: Stephen King Master of Horror Meets Comic Books

By Chad Derdowski     October 28, 2009

Marvel Comics struck a deal with Stephen King a few years back and it’s likely that they’re getting their money’s worth from the deal. There’s no doubt that the adaptation and continuation of The Dark Tower series has been a big moneymaker as has the long-winded and word-perfect adaptation of The Stand. But why not milk the cash cow for all it’s worth? Marvel is in the business of adapting loads of classic novels these days, so why not adapt a few more stories by the master of the modern horror classic? We think a lot of King’s work would lend itself well to comic adaptation. Here are just a few:

10. The Mist

First and foremost, we have to go with this H.P. Lovecraft-influenced novella, a long-time favorite among King fans. It’s a story of conspiracy, monsters and paranoia in a small-minded small town. Echoing the classic Twilight Zone episode “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street” (only with real monsters) as well as the H.F. Arnold story Night Wire, The Mist is revered for a reason: it’s awesome. We think it could make an awesome comic book as well. Can we get Richard Corben to illustrate it?

9. The Running Man

This story of a dystopian American society in which people win money on deadly game shows is completely appropriate for the state of the world today could be used as an eerie metaphor for our obsession with reality TV and America’s terrible economic situation. Plus, it’s one of King’s best action/sci-fi adventures and would just make a kick-ass comic! Remember how cool the movie was? Now imagine if there were no budgetary restrictions! Also, it would be nice to see an adaptation that was a little truer to the original story. Ah-nuld was great, but he was hardly the scrawny protagonist Ben Richards was in the story.

8. Little Sisters of Eluria

Odds are we’re going to see it anyway since it’s a Dark Tower story. But we still figured it deserved a spot on the list. This story of vampires, crazy nuns and lost loves is easy to overlook when taking in the Dark Tower as a whole, but hey – in for a penny, in for a pound. Frankly, we think Marvel ought to just go ahead and adapt the entire Dark Tower series; but we’ll settle for this short story.

7. ‘Salem’s Lot

The idea behind this one is simple: what would happen if Dracula came back nowadays and lived in a rural town in Maine? The answer is that he’d make a whole lot of money. Vampires are big business these days (actually, when aren’t they?) and ‘Salem’s Lot is held in high regard as classic King.  It’s a no-brainer to turn it into a comic book. We don’t care who handles the art chores as long as Ben Mears doesn’t look like David Soul.

6. The Dead Zone

Another King book that falls more into the supernatural realm than the world of horror, The Dead Zone is one of the more obvious choices for comic adaptation. A guy is injured, lies in a coma for five years and when he awakens, he has psychic abilities and uses them to help people. This one has comic book written all over it! And not only would it work great as a comic, the adaptation could potentially serve as a launching point for an ongoing series (assuming they altered the ending somewhat). Hey, it worked as a weekly television series for six seasons: there’s no reason to assume it couldn’t work as a monthly comic with the right team working on it.

5. Cell

When “The Pulse” hits, any cell phone user is instantly stripped of their sanity and turns into a bloodthirsty maniac. This technophobic tale should appeal to both luddites and zombie fans and if you hadn’t noticed, this zombie thing hasn’t exactly gone away yet. Think about how many people you see using cell phones during the average day. Now imagine that all of them go stark raving nuts at the exact same time and being that one sane dude struggling to find your kid. It’s scary as hell and could make The Walking Dead look like a walk in the park.

4. Eyes of the Dragon

Stephen King is known for his horror writing, though he often incorporates elements of science fiction and fantasy into his work. But Eyes of the Dragon is something of a departure, as it is straight-up, no-holds-barred fantasy at its finest. It’s got clear cut good and evil, a wizard plotting to assassinate a queen and steal a kingdom, two estranged princes and a whole bunch of magic, dragons, swords and sorcery. It’s the type of story that would be hard to adapt as a movie, but perfect as a comic book and like many of King’s works, it ties into the larger picture of the Dark Tower… because after all, all things follow the path of the Beam.

3. Pet Sematary

When a family cat dies and is buried on an ancient Indian burial ground, it comes back to life with an ornery disposition. When a kid dies and they bury him on the Indian burial ground, all hell breaks loose – quite literally. Turns out the thing that comes back isn’t exactly their child. This book has living dead, demonic possession, cannibalism and even a Wendigo. A WENDIGO! If Pet Sematary isn’t crying for the comic book treatment, I don’t know what is.

2. Trucks

A group of people trapped in a truck stop menaced by malevolent vehicles? Oh god yes. We’re begging for it, Marvel!
This story has been adapted twice: once on the small screen and of course, on the big screen under the title Maximum Overdrive. Maybe it’s the fact that the lead semi in that movie had an enormous Green Goblin head on the grill, but we think that Trucks could make an awesome comic book. The only thing missing would be the AC/DC soundtrack. And here’s the sweetest part – the story was left pretty open ended (sorry, spoilers). This could be another ongoing series! It’s like Transformers had a baby with George Romero! We’ve already added it to our pull list just in case.

1. Firestarter

It seems pretty obvious that this story of a super-powered little girl and the government agency that is hunting her was inspired at least in part by superhero comic books, which makes it a perfect choice to be adapted into sequential art form. Stephen King himself has said that he’d like to see it turned into a comic book and like The Dead Zone or Trucks, this one could easily be altered to turn it into an ongoing series as well. We’d go so far as to say that of all of Stephen King’s books, Firestarter is demanding a comic book adaptation! Let’s see it happen, Marvel!

It was tough narrowing our list down to our top 10 choices, especially since Stephen King has about a billion and a half books in print. We might’ve left a lot of great stories off of the list, but we figured that some stuff just won’t translate. Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption probably doesn’t need the comic book treatment and The Body might just be a little too dull.
Our choices stuck with the more action oriented stories in King’s collection, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t forget a few great ones. Speak out, Maniacs – what are your choices for Stephen King books that need to be adapted into comic book form?

The miniseries kinda sucked, but the Langoliers would make a good comic. Dead white space after the Langies erased reality!

Heck, make a House of Suspense series again with his stories, most of the Night Shift, Monkey Shines, and others would make swell stories. The Jaunt and Survivor Type were brilliant! Mmmmm and Crouch End!

From a Buick 8. I loved that book - it's very Lovecraftian. The car that only seems normal at a glance, but is somehow also very wrong. The weird creatures that come out of it. The "man in black" that originally drove it. The trunk that opens into a world that is just very, very wrong. I'd like to see that in comic form.

Dear Mania, I am a huge Stephen King fan (though not his number 1).  Please change the picture for the Dead Zone to Christopher Walken's version of the character.  The Dead Zone movie was one of the best if not the best SK adaptation.  Christopher Walken was the perfect Jonny Smith in every way... creepy, tortured, lovable, and mysterious.  The Dead Zone TV show with Anthony Michael Hall doing his best Chris Walken impersonation just doesn't do it justice.  maniacs, please check out http://www.persona-non-grata.com

Little Nell, I loved Buick 8.  Those creatures gave me the hibbie jibbies when I read it.  I loved the book jacket description too

"From a Buick 8 is a novel about our fascination with deadly things, about our insistence on answers when there are none, about terror and courage in the face of the unknowable."

"invisioner" has it right.  A comic series in the "vein" (heh, heh) of House of Mystery using all SK short stories would be swwweeeeet!  Hell, SK already has the perfect title with Night Shift.

Good idea for a list & a good list.

Surprised no to see It, Misery, Cujo &/or Carrie on the list but 10 is 10. In my mind's eye, I picture Perkins' art on all of these.

Even better, how about the eBook "The Plant"?

One more thought I had just before seeing invisioner's reply above (I swear!), how about an ongoing collecting King's shorts stories & other short stories, some from TV & some all-new? Not necessarily everything from King but the stories should all be in the same vein, occupying a single issue or a few; whatever the story dictates. I've got the perfert title: "Creepshow".

How can anybody forget Talisman and Black House?  They also tie into the Dark Tower series somehow.  And Eye of the Dragon?  Come on, Mania!

MrJawbreakingEquilibrium 10/28/2009 10:09:39 AM

Also, Desperation and Regulators.  Those would be awesome. And my earlier comment about Eyes of the Dragon wasn't about it not being on the list but tying into the Dark Tower.

myklspader 10/28/2009 10:10:34 AM

The list was OK. Marvel should just get with King and make “Creepshow” a series and get it over with. They could make the first two flicks one huge graphic novel to kick it off and then go into a monthly issue deal or so with the rest of his short stories and maybe even King would write or dust off some stuff we never have seen yet.

Everyone is talking about the Tower series… what doesn't King tie into that epic series at this point? I would love to see out of all of this, and it wasn't mentioned “Needful Things”. Yes it may be a slow burn in the sense of the action would not be there all the time but that is what made that so cool in the first place. I could see it coming off like Arkham or even “Sandman” like with the pace.

LittleNell1824 10/28/2009 10:55:00 AM

MrJaw, yeah, I was disappointed that they never did the TV movie treatment of The Regulators. I want to see that big Barbie van coming down the street. LoL
