Sideshow Collectibles, in association with New Line Cinema, is currently producing a line of LORD OF THE RINGS Premium Format figures. This 1:4 scale figure line follows a very successful Lord of the Rings collectibles line, created when Sideshow Collectibles partnered with award winner effects studio, WETA workshop, to produce more than 180 high-end, collectable statues, busts, and helms. Starting in second-quarter 2006, Sideshow Collectible's own LORD OF THE RINGS range will expand to include 12-inch figures from the landmark film series.

The adventures and exploits of Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf, and their allies and enemies became touchstones of modern literature when first conceived by author J.R.R. Tolkien in THE LORD OF THE RINGS.

Sideshow's 12-inch posable figures feature more than 30 points of articulation. The figures will combine intricate, layered costuming, action-oriented body poses, and will come fully equipped with weapons, shields, and other authentic accessories.

The figures will retail for approximately $50 to $75.

These prices are well in range with the rest of the figures Sideshow produces. If you look at other companies who produce figures of comparable quality (medicom, and Dragon figures can fetch hundreds), this is actually pretty reasonable. These aren't toys, they're sixth scale collectibles, and the detail, great likeness, incredible articulation, and realism in costume and accessories are what you're paying for. You also have to consider after market value when contemplating these. Some of Sideshow's products have fetched literally 100 times the retail value on ebay, and other auctions. Limited runs mean rabid nerds with more money than me will pay arms legs for sold out collectibles on ebay. The Balrog sculpture they did a few years ago retailed for around $300, and sold for over $3000.

I personally would love to have a sixth scale fellowship as the crown jewell of my collection, and so far all we've been offered is a half assed attempt by toybiz (retailing for between $20-$30) and an only slightly better European release from DID (retailing for between $40-$70. So a few extra bucks for an astromomical increase in quality is okay in my book.

I really would like to see these figures before making a judgment call. I own some LOTR collectibles from the Noble Collection which I really like, but they were all gifts.

Being right feels good. go to www.sideshowtoy.com and check it out. the first figure is Aragorn and it looks amazing. The head sculpt looks as good as the quarter scale figure that Neca did, and the detail on the clothing and accessories is awesome. I can't wait to see Gandalf and Legolas. If they do a Sauron figure in this scale I'll crap myself with joy.
