New Mutants Movie Advice From Mania

The X-Men franchise has been a big moneymaker for Fox and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down any time soon. Wolverine 2 is a definite and the X-Men: First Class prequel has been mentioned, but it may very well be that the next installment will see today’s mutants toss their caps in the air and graduate while a new class steps in. Will we see the next generation of mutation arrive at the steps of Xavier’s Institute for Higher Learning? Are the New Mutants going to be the next film in the X-Franchise? With teenagers accounting for a large portion of ticket sales, it only makes sense to aim an X-Movie directly at them.

The New Mutants is fondly remembered as the series that took the X-Men back to their roots as a school that trained young mutants in the use of their abilities. A number of different incarnations have graced the pages of the comic book, but which characters should make the cut on the big screen? Here are our picks.

13. Kitty Pryde

Remember when Professor X busted Kitty down from X-Man to New Mutant? Remember how she resented him and the rest of the team as well? Remember when you were a kid and you thought you oughtta be able to do the same things that the adults were allowed to do and it pissed you off when you weren’t? Well, yeah… that’s why Kitty should be in this movie.

Though she isn’t really considered one of the traditional New Mutants, Kitty Pryde did play a fairly large role in X3 so it would be a nice bridge between films. Also, we really want to see a recreation of the famous “Professor Xavier is a jerk!” splash page. In fact, it should probably be the opening scene of the movie.

12. Cannonball

If you’re talking about characters most often associated with the New Mutants, Sam “Cannonball” Guthrie is one of the first names that comes to mind. This lanky Kentuckian was a founding member of the team and a natural born leader, even if he lacked the confidence required to do it.

A big ol’ awkward goofball who lacks both self-esteem and control over his powers? That sounds like a lot like high school to us and a New Mutants movie without Cannonball is like an X-Men movie without the Professor.

11. Danielle Moonstar

Another founding member, Danielle Moonstar was not only a prominent Native American character (Cheyenne, to be specific) and a strong female role model, but  she had some sweet powers too!

The ability to create three-dimensional psionic constructs of her enemies’ worst fears would make a great visual on the silver screen and if she ended up using it (whether purposefully or inadvertently) on her teammates, it could be used as a fantastic depiction of the insecurities that come along with being a teenager. But mostly, it would just look really sweet.

10. Sunspot

Because every team needs an impulsive hotshot, because every team needs a powerhouse and because the depiction of Sunspot’s power on the printed page was the coolest thing we’d seen since Colossus. Imagine how awesome that could look on using today’s special effects?
The phrase “Careful Bobby, you’re strong, not invulnerable!” was seen many times throughout the New Mutants’ original run. The idea of a super strong character that can still get the crap kicked out of him is always a good one and since this movie won’t have Wolverine in it, Roberto DaCosta will fill that role nicely.

9. Wolfsbane

It seems like a prerequisite that every X-Movie has a furry character or a shapeshifter–why not combine the two with Rahne Sinclair? The emotional conflict she felt due to her deeply religious upbringing and the feral nature of her powers (and the enjoyment they bring her) will work just as well as a metaphor for burgeoning sexuality on the big screen as it did in the comics. Plus, werewolves are just plain cool and it might get the Twilight crowd on board too.

8. Colossus

What? Colossus was never a member of the New Mutants! That may be true, but he was a junior member of the X-Men in The Last Stand, which makes him a shoe-in as either a trainer/sparring partner for the New Mutants or simply as the guy who appears in a brief cameo to show them around the mansion.

Plus, it sets up the introduction of our next character, and the plot of the movie…

7. Magik

When Peter Raspution’s younger sister Illyana emerges seven years older after disappearing into Limbo, she brings with her a bevy of sorcery skills as well as the Soulsword and an unholy host of demons that will do her bidding. Naturally, Pete brings her to Xavier’s school to better train her to use her abilities for the benefit of both man and mutantkind.

But Xavier’s isn’t the only school where mutant professors are eyeing the latest prospects…

6. The White Queen

Emma Frost, the Headmistress of the Massachusetts Academy, has her own devious ideas about training the next generation of mutants. Being a member of the Hellfire Club’s Inner Circle, Emma sees Illyana Rasputin and her control over Limbo to be the perfect weapon to enact the culmination of the Clubs centuries-long attempt to dominate the world.

And there’s the basic plot in a nutshell. A group of new mutants enroll at Xavier’s school and enjoy a rivalry with the only other school for mutants in America, but when a crazy girl and a bunch of demons show up, the rivalry starts to lean toward the unhealthy side and the fate of the earth hangs in the balance.

Supporting Characters

It wouldn’t be an X-Movie without tons of cameos and walk-on roles. Here are a few folks we’d like to see pop up on screen for a minute or two:

5. Angel

In the comics, Warren Worthington III was a founding member of the X-Men, but the film franchise has its own continuity. Perhaps Angel could be reintroduced as a potential member of the New Mutants or he might just appear as somebody’s roommate in a scene or two.

4. Magma

Much like fellow teammate Sunspot, Magma just looks cool when she’s using her powers. There’s gotta be a Danger Room sequence where this lava-controlling mutant might make a cameo.

3. Storm

With Xavier killed off in the last movie, the school has to have a new Headmaster. Or Headmistress… whatever the title, Ororo Munroe is your girl. And Ororo’s close friendship with Kitty will be a major source of strife if she’s the one who has to tell Kitty the bad news about being demoted to the “X-Babies.”

2. Magneto

If Halle Berry won’t do it (and she likely won’t), maybe the proper path to follow would be the same one we saw in the comics? When Professor X left earth, he left his old pal Magnus in charge of his school, a fact that did not sit well with the original members of the X-Men. Perhaps after losing his powers in X3, Magneto will see the errors of his ways and decide to work towards Xavier’s dream… until, of course, he finds out his powers have returned.

1. Cypher

Poor Doug Ramsey. He had a power that was awesome in the classroom but worthless on the battlefield. But the ability to understand any language, be it human, alien or technological, made him fast friends with fellow computer nerd Kitty Pryde and it made him the only person who truly understood the techno-organic alien known as Warlock.

We’re not suggesting that the New Mutants movie delve into the whole Warlock story, but we are suggesting that the sequel does. And the best way to make it work is to introduce Cypher in the first film and use him as the kid who always gets picked last for the dodgeball team… until New Mutants 2 rolls around and Doug’s true worth is finally revealed.

Those are our picks for the New Mutants flick. We included the vast majority of the team, but left a few out. Sound off, Maniacs – which New Mutants do you think deserved to make the grade?

Ok this concept could work or it could bomb.  Personally I have always liked The New Mutants because I could identify with them when the comics came out....I was around 13 I believe.  So a comic book with teens and powers and all the problems that went along with them resonated with me.  And now I would love to see them on the big screen with todays special effects I am sure they would look awesome.  Guess all I can do is hope for this to happen sooner rather than later.

The New Mutants were always a favorite of mine and I followed them from becoming X-Force to now reforming as TNM's. You could and should cut the list down though. Storm, Magneto, Angel and  Colossus don't need to be in the movie. The rest of them, with the exception of Magma are pivotal. I would add Warlock.  Colossus could make a cameo just to visit his little sister, Illayana. For a villan I would use Legion. He is a tragic character but also his personalities are severely psychotic which would look pretty good on screen.

Ozymandas 11/12/2009 7:21:10 AM

I'd hardly consider any of the X-Men characters, including Kitty Pryde, "must haves" for a New Mutants flick. A few cameos would be ok but hardly necessary. The one exception to this is Professor X, who only happened to form the team in the first place, and he's not even on this list which is populated by 6 characters from the X-Men! That's 46& of your list! Lame list. You couldn't even find a spot for founding member Karma or fan-fave Warlock so that you could make room for Storm, Angel & Colossus? Sometimes I wonder if the folks that make these lists even read the comics.

ChadDerdowski 11/12/2009 8:24:41 AM

ponyboy76 - I'll be the first to admit the list is too long and a bit unwieldy, but the more I kept writing, the more I realized that certain characters ought to be in to connect the franchises.  For all intents and purposes, this is X-Men 4, so having characters like Storm, Angel and Colossus on the list was done with the intention that they would be cameo characters.  Magneto, on the other hand, was the headmaster at the school in Xavier's absence, so it made sense to me to include him.  It's really sort of an either/or situation between Storm and Magneto.

Legion would make an awesome villain, but I'd still save Warlock for the sequel.  I get where you're coming from though.  He's an important character but I kinda felt like his story would be too complicated to throw into the first film.  Some stuff has to get cut, right?

Ozymandius - Same thing.  Kitty Pryde is there to bridge the gap between franchises and frankly, I think my reasons given are pretty valid.  As filmgoers, it's good to have characters that we can connect with and there's plenty of teenagers out there who find themselves treated like children just as Kitty was.  Also, Ellen Page has stated that she'd jump at the chance to reprise the role and she could be a potential draw.

As for Professor X - he died at the end of X-Men 3.  That's why Storm and Magneto made the list as teachers.  I wrote the list under the assumption that the film falls into the same continuity as the previous X-Films, therefore Chuck is out and Ororo is in.  I actually mentioned all of these things in the article... sometimes I wonder if the people who read these lists even read these lists.

torvar72 11/12/2009 8:28:24 AM

Where the hell is Boom Boom the blond chick that has the ability to create bombs. She was a early member if the team yet she's not on the list....WTF???

VicDeZen 11/12/2009 8:52:15 AM

Okay, Ummm...what about Boom Boom AKA Meltdown, AKA Boomer??? She should definitely be apart of this if anything for a love interest for Cannonball.  What about Rictor?  He was a pretty important member of the team in there latter days who should be included.  I wouldn't want that many cameos from the X-Men to be honest as I would try to seperate this move from the current X-Franchise as much as possible.  Kitty Pryde...mmaybe. Professor X...okay he would have to be in it. That's it!

Warpath should make an appearance if anything for an antagonist during his Hellion days. Magik should not be the opening story for this movie.  That could be saved for a sequel.

Jasinner 11/12/2009 9:31:29 AM

I like the rival schools angle, but to do it right requires a massive change to this list. I agree on some of the must-haves, Cannonball, Moonstar, Sunspot and Wolfsbane. I Can't decide if I'd like to see Karma, I never liked the character but she's important to the formation of the team and Cannonball's character development. Add the Hellions, but skip the ones who were just dark mirrors of the New Mutants so Empath and Warpath would remain. The film continuity is very flexible so give Firestar a bigger role and throw Tabitha "Boom boom" Smith into the rival school along with Rusty, Skids, and Rictor. Siryn had a qiuck cameo in X2 so keep her at Xavier's and the romance that developed between her and Warpath would be a great forbidden love plotline. If your paying attention It's easy to see where I would like to see this story go, all the major players are there except two: Trevor Fitzroy and Cable. As a two movie arc Introduce the players and the rivalry in the first movie with all the drama and a little action. Ramp up the action for the second film and add some fodder characters to both teams for Trevor to kill, and in act three have Cable show up, take out Trevor and pick up the surviving pieces of both teams to form X-Force. This not only forces the X-Force spinoff but opens the door to an Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix movie. With some of the lesser known characters this could be prime for equal parts fan service and new fan induction.

ponyboy76 11/12/2009 4:10:50 PM

I like the idea, but I don't see them ever introducing Cable. His story is way too complicated for Fox to do properly. You know they would leave out a lot of good stuff. I don't think they'll get into time traveling mutants from the future just yet. I'd love to see a Cable movie though, maybe add in Bishop somewhere.

I think this New Mutants movie is going to be a litle more grounded and more about the team getting together. Warlock's story, I guess could be used for future movie, but I think Legion is a must have villan.

I did forget about Boom Boom, Warpath and Karma. The first 2 don't come in for awhile anyway.

SaintDemon 11/12/2009 5:15:32 PM

I think your concept is spot on. However, having Magneto would be difficult in a movie, since his considred by most to be a terrorist. I don't think that was ever properly explained at the end of X3. I do think it would be interesting if he became headmaster of the school, or if he just got his power back and started trying to form his own team to battle the xavier team. That idea is a bit cleache, but if the government got in on it and picked up Magneto to help train their own mutant team while the Mansion had their team it would make for an interesting movie that had the two teams going toe to toe. I think another interesting idea would be having the New Mutants rescuing the X-Men. One member of the team could be Vulcan, who dies mid way through the film only to reappear angry and ready to take down those who he think abandoned him for the climax.

Spiderparker 11/12/2009 7:07:29 PM

Please no Magneto.  I am sick of Magneto. Enough of Magneto. He's not the only villian in the Mutants -Xmens world.  How about the Hellfire club to start. I like the rival school idea above for the first movie. think of th e cool "villian" students from that school.  (Empath to name one) Introduce the world and characters to a virgin audience the right way.  Dare I say play it out like a "Twlight" movie. Let's see them dealing with their powers,,getting stronger, boy friend girlfriend crap. It's all good. This is the ulitmate origin story. It has so much more potential than Xmen every did.  (i'm still fuming how they messed up Rogues's character)  Don't get me started.
