August saw the long in production second STAR WARS prequel finally get a title. The film series' officially website declared it to be STAR WARS: EPISODE II - ATTACK OF THE CLONES. The title seemed to be in keeping with George Lucas' current ideas of the series in almost old-fashioned serial tones. Hayden Christesen and Christopher Lee liked it, while Ewan McGregor didn't and vocally so. He later recanted his criticism.
Moving from big budget to low budget franchises, after hyping that the eighth HALLOWEEN film, directed by Rick Rosenthal, would be hitting theaters in time for the holiday the franchise took its name from, it was determined that it needed some further tinkering. HALLOWEEN: HOMECOMING is now scheduled for release Easter 2002.
Yet another BATMAN oriented movie project was put into development at Warner Bros., with this one focusing on a team-up between the Dark Knight and the Last Son of Krypton, Superman. SLEEPY HOLLOW's Andrew Kevin Walker was tapped to write the script.
Meanwhile, in the "Projects We Don't Need" Department, word came from Beacon that the company had acquired the rights to remake George Romero's classic 70s horror film DAWN OF THE DEAD. Immediately a collective wail went up on the Internet from hard core fans of the original film, which soon afterwards resulted in Beacon removing the scant details of the production from their website.
August also saw us saying sad goodbyes to singer Aaliyah, make-up maestro John Chambers and Japanese sci fi film regular Robert Dunham.
The biggest bucks at the box office for the month went to RUSH HOUR 2, which took in $183,421,781 in 24 days. Behind that was AMERICAN PIE 2 with $109,337,940 grossed in 17 days. Both films stayed in the top ten for some time.
