Nerds, pirates and robots take over as MTV: Music Television today announced the nominees for the "2008 MTV Movie Awards." Performers and presenters for the "2008 MTV Movie Awards" will be announced at a later date.

"As someone who had his nose rubbed up against a locker or two, it's great to see my cinematic nerd brothers get their just rewards," said Van Toffler, President, MTV Networks Music, Logo and Films Group. "It's our audience that has made these movies huge box office hits and they've clearly spoken by nominating films with strong characters they can all relate to."

Once again, the 2008 MTV Movie Awards roll out the red carpet for another star-studded evening. Celebrities, comedic moments, and special appearances will be among the many surprises during the live show. Additionally, MTV unveils another new category, "BEST SUMMER MOVIE SO FAR" giving a nod to most recent summer blockbusters.

The destiny of the coveted golden popcorn lies in the hands of the viewers. Fans can vote by visiting MovieAwards.MTV.com before May 23rd to support their favorite nominees in each category. Fans can also go online to vote for the user-generated category, "BEST MOVIE SPOOF" where viewers have the opportunity to submit their own original movie shorts parodying films from the past year.

As previously announced, MTV has partnered with some of the most popular UGC video sites, including Photobucket, MySpace, Daily Motion, Break, Buzznet, Heavy and FunnyorDie to give anyone and everyone with a creative vision their chance to shine in a celeb-filled arena. Finalists for the "BEST MOVIE SPOOF" will be flown to Los Angeles to attend the "2008 MTV Movie Awards" where one will be crowned the winner.

Does anyone other than 12 years olds take this vapid useless channel seriously? They've ruined music in my lifetime and they'll ruin movies if they can. WTF are these based on? How much money they give MTV to promote?

No doubt. Does anyone still watch the MTV awards?

I'm trying to think of when MTV was last really relevant to society, or at the very least entertaining. irascible, I completely and wholeheartedly agree with you. MTV has made a policy of catering to kids under 18 and music has progressively gotten worse each passing year. Even the so-called "personalities" on MTV have gotten dumber and dumber every year too. I remember a time when the MTV movie awards could actually be funny (the sketch where Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn pitch Titanic 2 to James Cameron is nothing short of hilarious) but that's ancient history now.

I watch the MTV awards, not because of the 'awards' factor, but because they do tend to have some pretty good spoofs and such, and occasionally some decent bands.

And yes, I do believe that they take money for wins. Hence Transformers was sponsoring the "Best Movie You Haven't Seen Yet" category last year (what the hell kinda category is THAT, anyway...it's as bad as saying a movie sux before you see it). Then, shock of shocks, Transformers won the category...

I watch for the occasional entertainment factor, not to see who wins anything...

Javier Bardem and Topher Grace in the same category.......AHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Is it possible to vote "none of the above" for best movie? It is sad that MTV has become so irrelevant with overhyped "reality shows" and the occasional forgettable music video. For me, MTV died a long time ago.

Mtv video awards is the last show I would ever watch on that network. Spider-man was on it a few years back which impressed me.

MTV movie awards have become a very long and silly commercial.

So what unfunny comedian and or actor is going to be hosting this sham of award...

MTV used to be a great network until they started removing the actual videos and replaced them with crappy reality tv shows. The occasional shows were pretty cool, like Real World, Road Rules, and Beavis & Butt-Head but then they started to O.D. on that shit. I don`t know how old you are Irascible but you must be in your late 40`s or 50`s if you think MTV has "ruined" music in your lifetime. MTV may suck now, but they are responsible for a many great things, like the introduction of hip-hop to kids, mostly suburban caucasians who would never had the chance to see it anywhere else and Rock to kids like me who wouldn`t hear stuff like that in the hood. Its influenced fashion, and even the way alot of shows these days are shot from a production standpoint. Also, alot of directors that did music videos for groups back in the day that were put on MTV used it as a stepping stone to film. I understand people don`t like MTV these days and neither do I but you have to give props where props are due.
