The holiday box office season hasn’t technically started, what with Thanksgiving still ten days away, but our weekend numbers for this report could certainly hold their own against summer & holiday competition. Showing off the fact that the audiences continue to support director Roland Emmerich’s passion for destroying the world, Sony Pictures debuted his latest mass disaster flick 2012 into 3,404 theaters across the nation and raked in an impressive $65.0 million in domestic receipts in its first three days of release.
It wasn’t just North American audiences favoring the nod to global destruction because the film also accumulated an amazing $160 million over its first weekend in 105 foreign territories. These numbers combined has the studio grossing $225 million worldwide in just their first weekend of release, a full $25 mil past their budget of $200 mil.
Sony may be in good shape for their $200 million disaster epic but the jury is still out for Walt Disney’s more family-friendly 3D remake of A Christmas Carol, which clocks in with the same price tag. The film lands in 2nd place by adding another $22.3 million in its second weekend of release. While this is only a 25% drop from its debut, insiders are wondering whether it can overcome that sizeable budget before its demographic competition (Planet 51, The Princess and the Frog, Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel) arrives to take over the PG audience.
Overture should be pleased with their comedy, The Men Who Stare at Goats, maintaining the 3rd place spot for their second weekend in a row. The George Clooney release pulled in an estimated $6.2 million to increase the domestic tally to $23.3 million after ten days of release. Respectable numbers for a film which cost only $25 mil to produce.
Lionsgate also continues to grab incredible numbers with their limited release, Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire. Gaining momentum after averaging $100,000 per screen last weekend, the studio increased the distribution into 174 theaters this weekend and found the 4th place spot as a result. It grabbed an estimated $6.0 million and averaged $35,000 per showing in its second weekend of release. After ten days of release, it has $8.9 million.
And taking the 5th place spot is Sony’s documentary event, Michael Jackson’s This Is It, which took in another $5.1 million. After three weekends of release, it has taken in $68.2 million domestically and another $129.1 million in foreign markets.

And it’s now time for Twilight to return to the box office. While genre fans debate the merit of the franchise, there can be no denying the bankability of Summit’s adaptations. Last year’s Twilight ranks on top of the all-time vampire category with a domestic gross of $191.4 million. The film, which cost only $30 million to produce, would go on to take in a worldwide cume of $383.6 million in 2008.
And this next film, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, is tracking even higher based on pre-release sales, with midnight premieres sold out across the nation.
We shall see how it does next Sunday. Make your predictions below.

Let the hating begin:)

Unfortunately or fortunately depending on if you are a tween, New Moon will probably kill at the B.O. I finally caught Twilight on cable this weekend and while it wasn't awful, I'm not sure I'll check out New Moon. Apparently they ramped up the action in this one though. Every interview I have read about it, including Empire mag says they were really trying to get more guys to go see it. Of course guys will go see it, when they get dragged by their girlfriends.

I'm pretty surprised that 2012 has done so well globally. I guess the appeal of watching the White House get crushed by an aircraft carrier was too much of a enticement not to be missed, It'll drop like a smoker after a marathon next week due the bad word of mouth and New Moon.

I just got back from 2012 and we enjoyed it! For those who are preferring some sort of plot intensive dramatic screenplay, stay home!  The whole point of this movie is entertainment by mass destruction and that it delivered flawlessly!  Shit gets blown up real good in this movie!  If you're just out for some mindless destruction, I recommend it!

I saw it Fri night. It was just what I'd expected; disaster pron. Why call it disaster pron?

1. You know there is no plot.

2. You could care less about character development.

3. There are no big name stars.

4. You are just watching it to see the "action" with the world wide destruction being the "money shot."

I got what I wanted and left the theatre spent. ...lol

Samson

P.S.

I spelled it "pron" because the filters here won't let me use the correct spelling of the word. Censorship and oppression abounds! Where's Guy Fowlkes when you need him? ... lol

I'm afraid pony has it pretty much pegged on my views of New Moon.

My womans birthday was today, but her birthday present is a trip to see New Moon on opening day. *sigh*
I know a lot of women enjoy the movies, and some parts of it were fine for me....but c'mon! a vampire glistens like diamonds in the sunlight? NO! I wanna see flames and the vamp melting......but I guess diamonds are a girls best friend so I can overlook that, I guess.

Unfortunately, for my sake as I said earlier, I must go see New Moon on opening day as a birthday gift for the woman. What makes me believe pony about that movie rocking the socks off of the B.O. is the mere fact that my town is already sold out of tickets for the opening day showing. Now, I'm sure that may not be so much a shock to most, but my town only has 21,000 people living in it and this town is very much a part of the bible belt....so it comes as a bit of a shock for me. But since I'm going to go with the woman to see, I REALLY hope they upped the action in it. Otherwise I'm just going to see it to please the woman and to enjoy the popcorn.

As for 2012 doing so good....all I can say is "meh." I kinda enjoyed the Day After Tomorrow for the eye-candy and mindless entertainment....but that's just it. Mindlress entertainment. I'm sorry, but if I were a director known just for mindless coolness and CGI....you're damn straight I'd be trying to do a movie with a good PLOT.

I saw 2012 and it was prolly Emmerich's best movie. I liked it better then anythign else he has put out.I liked that he used mostly C list actors. ********************Minor Spoiler alert (in case anyone cares)********************** Of course the fact that they build 4 HUGE working ARK's (only 3 of which make it to sea) that hold around 800k people a peice in just 2 years is a load of bullcrap, it was a good movie otherwise. The effects were great and the story made sense and you actually cared about the caracters which is more i can say for any other of Emmerich's movies. Im sure most of you will hate on it but i dont care about anyone elses opinion, it was entertaining and thats the WHOLE POINT of movies :)

as I'm about 75 percent complete with "Eclipse," I must say it'll be interesting to see that one come next year, what with the wolf\vampire alliance that is being forged...

also, Jasper's background is certainly unique...what with all the vampire wars and such going on down Texas way...(thought of you there Jarrod)

oh -- and the mythology of how the wolves became wolves was cool...it just keeps getting better and better

don't give a damn about 2012

will be getting at the theater this friday an hour and thirty minutes earlier than the first showing -- last year was a nightmare getting in (as I was ignorant of the appeal) this year I'm going to call in the National Guard to make sure I can find a seat

why?

a high school is just a hop, skip and jump from the theater -- I swore all those girls must've ran from a few blocks away last year to beat down the doors to the Malco

Summit better not be ruining its own movies....but seeing as how that is increasingly the trend just to get more people in, what with all this pandering to non fans, it wouldn't surprise me that they won't care if they ruin it or not

2012 was a good weekend movie.  All the budget is onscreen.  John C was good as usual.  Not sure why people are saying no plot or story.  Watching a global network work on this problem was interesting, and they figured out the best solution to their situation without giving away too much.  The "come on guys!" speech from the obama type guy at the end was a little over the top but other than that a good movie.

Scrooge was a good one also.  Same story told over and over again.  I would like to see different takes on this.  They added a few small details to the story and the 3d flying stuff was pretty good.

ddiaz28 11/16/2009 6:38:36 AM

I enjoyed 2012 as well.  Sure it was completely over the top and ignored the laws of physics entirely (outrunning a massive vocano with a camper... crazy) but it was fun to watch billions of people die horrific deaths.  And I agree with Darkknight that I actually cared for some of the characters.  A buddy I went with left all stressed out because of all the insane situations they manage to escape from.  It was definitely better than Day After Tomorrow and if you like Emmerich's other film you'll probably enjoy this one.

As far as Twilight goes I could care less.  I caught half of it on cable the other day as I ate some lunch and while it kept me mildly entertained whlie I was eating, it wasn't a film I'd go back to and watch from the start.  The romance is nauseeatingly cheesy, the fast movement, jumping, and climbing of the vamps wasn't done very well, and while I liked how they changed the fact that they don't burn in sunlight, the diamond thing was laughable.  I understand why teenage girls would be drawn in but I know many adult females who love it, and that I don't understand.  Thank God my wife isn't one of them.

Darkknight2280 11/16/2009 7:32:39 AM

Twilight blows. I cant picture a guy (a manly man) walking around with a copy of any of the twilight books. The covers are soooo wussy and womanly looking. But then again i dont think that a manly man would be reading twilight in the 1st place. I have zero interest in reading the books and even less interest(not sure its possible but in this case it is) in seeing the movies. Since the previews are flooding the commercials i can say it looks like 90 mins of a teenaged boy with his shirt off, people crying/whining, horribleCGI and not to mention they turn into giant wolves NOT WEREWOLFS. I will say that this movie and many others should be ashamed of themselves of objectifying and sexualizing teenagers (kids) its GROSS. People (men and women) shouldnt be taking their clothes off in ANY forum unless you are over the age of 18!! Whats wrong with this world!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
