I have been attending Motor City Con since the beginning and have seen it grow from the days of being in a small venue roughly the size of a high school, to its current location at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, MI, with nearly 250,000 square feet of space.  But after last year, I was not sure I would be back, even with getting a media pass.  Traffic backed up for miles from the event center; lengthy lines in 85 degree heat just to get inside; marathon waits to get autographs from certain guests...It all made for an experience that had fans up in arms.

I am happy to say that this year’s show ran much more smoothly.  Over 2000 additional parking spaces were added, alleviating traffic issues.  Instead of sharing the convention site with another event, the Motor City Con had the entire site to itself, which meant that guests and dealers could be spread out more, giving patrons more room to walk.  The show also used a ticket system for the major guests.  Instead of standing in line for hours, you were issued a ticket and given a time to return based on the number of your ticket.  This allowed the show to keep the lines down to a minimum number of ticket holders at any one time.  Yes there were still lines waiting to get in the showplace but those were mainly limited to when the show opened for the day.  Arriving as I did a couple of hours in, there were no lines to park or to get in.

This year’s show was highlighted by appearances from William Shatner; John Bernthal, Scott Wilson, Jane Mcneil, and Kyla Kenedy from “The Walking Dead”; John Barrowman and Katie Cassidy from “Arrow”; Jason Mamoa from “Game of Thrones”; J. August Richards from “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”; Tommy Flanagan and Drea de Matteo from “Sons of Anarchy”; Karl Urban from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Star Trek films; Jason David Frank from The Power Rangers, as well as The stars of classic TV series “The Six Million Dollar Man” and “The Bionic Woman” Lee Majors, Lindsay Wagner, and Richard Anderson, as well as many more.

Surprisingly (to me anyway) one of the consistently long lines belonged Jason David Frank of The Power Rangers Fame.  Relishing his time in Detroit, Frank kept his own video diary of the event and of many of the fans he met which he has posted on YouTube.

One area I would love to see the show improve in is its diversity of dealers, particularly the toy dealers.  There’s very little vintage stuff to be found outside of a couple of booths.  Most of the goods offered are from releases from the past five years.  I am still trying to round out a collection of Kingdom Come figures and I found ONE in two days of searching.  There are other areas which can use improvement as well, notably more concession windows and additional seating.  No con is perfect and Motor City Comic Con has certainly had its share of growing pains.  I can foresee the need for an even larger venue to host the show in the not too distant future.  But, the 25th anniversary show went a long ways to fix the problems from last year and was one of my most enjoyable MCCC’s in years.

It’s not a comic con anymore unless you can snap pics of the hundreds of people who come dressed in costume to enjoy the show.  Here is some of the cosplay pics from this past weekend’s 25th Anniversary Motor City Comic Con!

Another website when showing amateur pics of Bats v Supes shooting in the Detroit area happened to list Jason Momoa as being in the cast. Later they took it down. Even if it was in erro, there have been rumors of him getting parts like J'onn J'onzz, Aquaman, or Lobo for the DC movies. Since they are shooting there I wonder if Momoa was also in Detroit to have some meeting with director Zack Snyder and the producers about future work in the sequels.

Wow! It's grown a lot over the years. I used to go way back when it was held in Dearborn at the civic center or something like that. I met Patrick Stewart and local legend (at least for me), The Ghoul. Both of them great guys.

Glad you covered it. It's always great to see the Metro Area get some positive shine. Great pics, too!
