Next month kicks off with one the highlights of the autumn social season for collectors of enigmatic curiosities. Branded as a "weekend of the weird and wonderful", the annual Fortean UnConvention will be held in the center of London on November 1st and 2nd this year, which is only a couple of weeks away now.

Sponsored by the Fortean Times magazine, one of the stalwarts of the the "alternative" community since 1973, there will be two days of lectures on all aspects of "strange phenomena", from UFOs to the paranormal to Nick Redfern's assorted monsters. But, best of all, the UnCon provides a perfect opportunity for investigators, authors, and secret networks to exchange tall tales and share gossip, which I will be looking forward to with great anticipation.

I will be especially happy to hook up with Theo Paijmans, an old pal who recently featured in the Discovery Channel's documentary Dark Fellowships: The Vril.

Well-known investigator Mark Pilkington will also be lecturing, as will Gary Lachman, founding member of pop group Blondie, turned esoteric author.

Patrick Huyghe, a former contributing editor to Omni magazine and current editor of Anomalist Books, will be conducting a publishing workshop, which I'll definitely check out so that I'll know what rules to break…

The very next weekend, on November 8th, the Frenchies will be holding their own Fortean "Congres" in Paris, where the food will be better and the gossip will probably focus on the latest fake Mary Magdalene tomb performance art piece.

... Sounds brilliant!  I cannot wait to go.  Will Sarah Palin be attending?

Groan. I'm definitely going to refrain from opening any political cans of worms in 23.5 Degrees!

Palin is about as esoteric as a box of hair.  The only arcane mystery about her is how she got to where she is today.  Will you be going to the French "Congres" as well, Stella?  It would be worth it for the French put-downs.

... I think that that might be a little harsh on Michael Palin's sister.  I think her emptiness has an almost ethereal depth to it, like staring into the Grand Canyon.  While her communications skills chipset may be only third generation, I feel her training for earth has been quite proficient.  Her impersonation of the idiot portrayed by Tina F on SNL was brilliant.  Besides, haven't we moved on from the model of having a thoughtful, strategic and articulate leader over the past eight years?  Maybe the US' loss would be Heff's gain...
