So it has been a while since I reviewed an episode of this series. I haven’t stopped watching, I’ve just been waiting to see if it would get surprisingly better or noticeably worse. The story has changed, but the series has maintained a constant level of mediocrity. So, Cheung has the chip from one of the nukes that will let him hack into Russian systems. It’s broken though, and in order to get it fixed he’s struck a secret deal which plays out in this episode. Cheung has hired a bunch of mercenaries to break into CTU. I’m on the fence about this. While I didn’t see it coming, once it did, I remembered being here before, which is a constant problem for this season. If we hadn’t already seen so many repeated themes and specific plot elements throughout this season, the invasion of CTU might have been more intense but all I could think about were the various other times this has happened. Some of you will defend the series saying that it’s all part of the 24 formula, well that’s just too forgiving. 24 does have a formula but the best seasons told unique stories and set up unique situations that previous seasons hadn’t done, all within this formula.

Anyway, it turns out that the mercs are after Jack’s nephew. Jack gets out of his cell and tries to protect his sister-in-law and nephew but Jack and the sister-in-law are caught just as the nephew scurries up into the ductwork. By the way, how many building have you actually seen that have these big fans scattered around? I’m not saying they don’t exist, I’m just saying they aren’t as common as Hollywood makes out. My office is in an 18 story building and there’s not one of these to be found. Anyway, the mercs immediately ask who is in charge. Nadia glances around and clams up but Milo steps up to pretend to be the leader in order to protect her. He gets paid with a bullet to the head. Now this made me lean forward in my recliner. I know this series has no problem killing off series regulars and fan favorites, but it still surprised me. Well, I guess Nadia doesn’t have to worry about her mixed feelings about Doyle and Milo now. Does this mean that Doyle is going to become a series regular? Oh I really hope not. One thing that I expected to see in this episode that I didn’t was the predictable opportunity for Morris to redeem himself and make it OK for he and Chloe to get back together. It didn’t happen but the mercs aren’t gone yet.

It turns out that Cheung wanted Josh because the man repairing the chip is papa Bauer. I knew we hadn’t seen the last of him but the way characters just seem to come and go, and stay gone for a really long time, and then return in this season is a little disconcerting. He will trade Josh to Cheung for the repaired chip. It seems that he plans to take Josh with him to China. So as I’ve mentioned before I heard that the 24 feature film will be set in China. Will Jack chase his father across China to retrieve his nephew?

Even though this feels like a rerun of seasons past there were still some exciting scenes and Milo’s death was pretty shocking (albeit not as effective as Edgar’s death in a previous season). I did really hate to see Jack’s dad back in the picture though. I wanted to see more of Audrey’s story. They save her, she barely starts to come out of her shock and she’s whisked away by her father. There’s only a few hours left in the season so I don’t believe this story will get finished this year. We’ll see more of it either in the film or in the next season. Now that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of her, she could pull a President Palmer and suddenly come out of her near comatose state in time to call Jack with just the information he needs to save the day. Speaking of Palmer, what’s up with him? Also, what about Logan and his crazy and fun ex-wife?

While all of this is happening President Daniels is dealing with Lisa, his assistant/lover, who has been sleeping with a lobbyist that takes information from her and filters it to the Russians. The plan that he and Lennox have concocted is to put some fake notes on her PDA to indicate that the situation with the chip has been taken care of, let the lobbyist get that information and send it to the Russians, and hopefully they will stand down their attack. Well, when Lisa gets back to the lobbyists townhouse he’s more interested in examining Lisa than he is her PDA. She tries several times to excuse herself to the bathroom so he would have time to get the information from her PDA but he insists on “helping her relax” first. Sure maybe this plan would happen and maybe it would be created by the President and his chief of staff, but would the chief of staff really be in the surveillance van? The writers try to cover the situation by having Lennox say something to the effect of “we need to keep the circle as tight as possible”. It doesn’t work for me though because there were secret service people in the van that could have handled the situation without having the chief of staff directly involved and possibly in harms way.

Overall, we’re still in rinse and repeat mode but the series in its final hours has improved. We’ve seen it all before, but with that said, there were still some exciting moments in the episode. Call me a glutton for punishment but I’m sticking with it until the very end.

This season just gets worse and worse. The Chinese didn't even know they'd have to break in to CTU until about an hour before they did it. Great security CTU! Next season they might as well just have the terrorists walk through the front door. Audrey is taken away from CTU less than two hours after arriving, despite the fact that she's an important witness who could possibly still help avert an international incident, yet Jack's nephew and sister-in-law are still there? This whole season has gone so far down hill. Which sucks, because it started out really good.

I have to agree with nax37, the season started off with sooo much potential, Jack not being to stomach the job anymore, the nuke going off, etc... but 4 episodes in, and Jack was good to go.
And does anyone else find it strange that papa Bauer is going to such lengths to get his grandson when a few hours ago he killed his father and was ready to kill him to protect his company!. Even by 24 standards, its just too ridiculous.

I'm finishing this season, and I might glance at next season when it starts, but I'd better get a good feel that they've tightened things up next year, or they've lost a regular viewer.

CTU must be the most dangerous place on earth to work. Their security really does suck. Wearing a white uniform at CTU is as bad as a red uniform on Star Trek. While not being my favorite season, I'm not hating it either. I do wish they had kept Jack off a bit after his Chiense torture vacation. More like the thrid season when he was trying to kick the drug habit. Still my favoriate all time storyline. I think it would have been an awsome idea to set this whole storyline in China. Why didn't they? Anyway, I still feel this is one of the best series on TV and I would give it more than a C grade.

I guess last week's episode (1:00AM-2:00AM) was bad enough that no one reviewed it?

It is turning into a "I'll watch it later on TIVO" type of show. Since it is opposite HEROES, I'm opting to watch Heroes live and 24 on my Tivo list. That means 24 will get me skipping their commercials.

I liked how in the beginning, Jack had all but given up on being a CTU agent. The "I can't do this anymore." attitude, but that plot ended there. They could've shown his fears throughout the day(season) and his judgments could've been wrong.

They could've made him make poor decision after poor decision... then finally snap out of it by seeing what they did to Audrey or something.

I liked last week's line when Audrey's papa told Jack that everyone he knows ends up dead. It just didn't seem to matter much to Jack except for the minute or so after he said it.

I understand that there is romance in office situations, but this season... there is too much of it and I think people watch this show for the action and suspense (not the romance)... Otherwise, we'd be watching Grey's Anatomy.

I'll still finish this season and I'll continue to watch next season as well. It's a good show. It's just not a great show as it was in previous years. And it's not a 5th-grade dumbing, briefcase-opening, catwalk-whining, mindless-reality sing-a-thon... so I'm totally fine with that.

I haven't watched any of 24 this year. I haven't had to. From what I heard, they are rehashing plotlines from previous seasons. The President is in danger. The Vice President goes off on his own and does something against the President's wishes. CTU is attacked. Someone cares about is in danger. Jack goes off on his own because he is always right. Just fill in the details and put in some unnecessary filler, some ludicrous plot twists, and you have a seaon of 24. I just find this out by what I read and the previews for the next episode. I don't need to watch.

This season of 24 has been such a letdown. After a blow-out four-hour premiere, I just became increasingly disinterested as the season went along. Last Monday, I fell asleep while watching it. This past Monday, I completely forgot to tune in. At this point, I'm just going to drop out for the remainder of the season - I may tune in for the finale just to see if anything gets setup for next season.

I'll still come back to 24 next January. The producers are at least acknowledging that this has not been a good season, so hopefully the 24-mula will get a good shaking up next season. 24 is also a program that's in the unique position of being able to effectively reboot itself from season to season, so I'll always be back to see if I can get hooked on whatever story they concoct. Even this season started out well - it just went horribly awry.

The whole invasion of CTU was absolute bullshit. From their computer and physical security to Jack being the only one capable of actually killing or repelling anyone. Shit, the average home security has the ability to automatically transmit to police once breached without you having to do aything and it can't be "bypassed". Just the fact that the Chinese would openly engage in attacks and missions on U.S. soil is pretty ridiculous. Like the combined forces of our military and local anti-terror units wouldn't squash that shit quick. I know we've done the same many times on foreign soil but 24 is really asking too much for suspension of disbelief.

Plus it was hard buying the nervousness of the VP's assistant. When that much is at stake you would pull it together much better, especially when you had no trouble screwing the guy while lying to another guy all along.

CappyMorgan • May 11, 2007, 10:32am •
Snallygaster, did the producers really acknowledge that it wasn't up to par this year? That would be strange. Is this public? I'll be honest, I'm tiered of CTU. Like I said, I'd really have enjoyed a "fish out of water" story with Jack in China. It could have been one of the best seasons yet. I agree, it is a bit of a rehash. Plus, I have not liked having another Palmer as President. Obviously, it would have been a better choice to have the VP in charge the whole time. He is the best part of the season. I agree, skoora, the part of the Chinese being able to easily access CTU was over the top. And, everyone working there was incompetant. The only "shock" was Milo. The more I think of it...it doesn't say a lot for TV if this is still the best show on. I hope this is a wake up call and the set the bar a bit higher, or we will never see the 24 feature film.
