Broken Ribs and a Possible Punctured Lung Don’t Get in Jack’s Way

So, it’s officially over. Fox has confirmed that this is the last season of 24. Will our show of choice go out with a bang or a whimper? If this week is any indication, the show will go out in classic 24 style, for better or for worse. This is the episode where the already revealed turncoats kick into action and any that haven’t been revealed will finally slither out of the woodwork. There always has to be someone within the President’s inner circle that turns on her. Usually that person is connected to the villains, but this time it’s the military. Sure, this has happened on 24 before to but at least it’s a little less common.

Michael Gaston, who you may remember recently from Jericho, joins the show this week as Gen. David Brucker and he of course doesn’t agree with the President. The terrorists have called the President (wow, it seems so easy) and threatened to blow up a large section of Manhattan if President Hassan isn’t turned over to them. The President refuses to deal with the terrorists instead putting her trust in Jack Bauer and CTU. The General and another member of the President’s staff believe that giving up one man is better than taking a chance on the murder of thousands. Even after the President stands in front of her staff and delivers an Independence Day (for better or for worse depending on your opinion of that film) feeling super patriotic speech, their opinions aren’t swayed. If anyone other than Cherry Jones had delivered that speech, it would have been a total disaster. As it stands, it was just a little cheesy.

The General uses his command to force the Hassan to be turned over to the terrorists. What the General couldn’t plan for is the dynamic duo of Jack and Renee leading the soldiers assigned to protect Hassan and deliver him to the U.N. The action and suspense in these parts of the episode are classic 24 and was spot on. The problem with the series this year and last year is that it has taken way too long to get to this level of excitement. It’s only the last handful of episodes that have taken the show to the level that fans have come to expect over the last eight years.

Dana Walsh has revealed herself as a turncoat and she was busy in this episode helping the terrorists make a run for it with the nuclear materials. At some points, she’s literally sitting among her co-workers talking to them on an ear bud and then for some reason at other times, she’d have to pick up a phone and leave the control center. She’s a character that is easy to nitpick because up to now she’s been so boring. She wasn’t exactly thrilling in this episode but she is set up to be more integral to the story and hopefully more entertaining. Jack and Cole already have suspicions about problems with the satellite so sooner rather than later she’s gonna get found out and hopefully get something interesting to do.

There’s great action and suspense in this episode, just what 24 needs. The President is finally back in play and Jack and Renee are in the field taking down bad guys. This is another one of those episodes of 24 that gives up the goods in every way. It would be pretty fantastic if the series could keep up this momentum for the remaining ten episodes and end the series on a really high note.

Looks like we get to see Ex-President Logan in the coming episodes.  He just never seems to go away, does he?  Too bad Palmer's dead...

And looks like Katee switched back to bad girl mode as well.

This episode was AWFUL!!  D , and that only because there was finally SOME action.  However, let's look closer at what's going on:

1) Yet again there is a spy inside CTU (been there, done that, and STUPID).  I was writhing on the couch when we were under the belief that CTU just didn't run a background check on Dana and missed her whole "I changed my name to hide that I'm a convicted felon" issue.  Now we're supposed to believe that she's a turncoat for the I.R.K. as well?!  I call bullsh*t.

2) Gen. Drucker was not believable at all.  No military general would willy-nilly throw away his career in an ill-conceived plan to send a black ops team to assassinate U.S. Secret Service agents and kidnap a foreign dignitary.  (Furthermore, NO military unit would obey an order that is THAT blatantly illegal!)  I know I'm biased as an Army vet myself, but COME ON!

3) Brannon Braga had a writing credit on this episode.  Epic fail. (I admit, it's a lame bias, but I throw it in as a sorbet to clear the pallete, mid-rant.)

4) Jack got stabbed, but recovered.  Now he got shot in the torso, right near where he got stabbed.  And again he's fine, without even a Tylenol.  I'm fine with "Jack is a bad-ass," but when you see the paramedic wrapping his bruised ribs, there is no mention of his stab wound from a couple hours ago.  That's bad planning and bad continuity.  That irks me.

5) We see over a dozen different terrorists driving around and later handling EXPOSED nuclear rods, without any mention of radiation burns, sickness, nausea, or even a headache.  WTF?  In the first couple episodes, we saw a Russian guy who was literally dying from having worked guard duty over the rods when they were encased in a poorly-sealed lead box!  Now these jackasses are handling the bare rods without even leather gloves on, and they're fine?!  EPIC FAIL.

"24" has always been a show about thrills and suspension of disbelief.  But continuity errors and the same, tired "mole within the organization" subplot has ruined this show.  "24" should've focused more on the action and the character development of Jack and some of his key surrounding personnel, and forgotten about the constant double/triple-agent routines that defy credibility and credulity.

I hate to see "24" get cancelled, but more because of the wasted potential than because of the "great" show that we are losing.

ponyboy76 3/30/2010 5:00:11 PM

Capt, is this your first time watching 24? It sure seems that way, with everything you just complained about. Like Stephen said, the military has gone against the President's wishes more than once in these 8 seasons. They did it to both Palmers. I don't see how this season is any different.

"Furthermore, NO military unit would obey an order that is THAT blatantly illegal!)" You are kidding me right? How about the chain of command? Not to mention they are just some military unit. They are a Wet team. The do black ops which are usually deemed as illegal.

Jack got stabbed yes and he was shot, but he was wearing a vest, which is why he's not dead. Why the hell are they gong to mention his stab wound? He's also freaking Jack Bauer.   "if Jack Bauer was Spartan in the movie 300, the movie would be called 1"

Your only valid point is the one about the nuclear rods. The only excuse for that is that I don#t remember them actually holding the rods but they were handling the case.

You defintiely don't watch this show regualrly and if you do, I don't know what to tell you. Its NOT REALITY!

ponyboy76 3/30/2010 5:06:44 PM

!Jack Bauer is what Willis was talking about."

When life hands Jack Bauer Lemons, he kills Terrorists. Jack Bauer fuggin' hates lemonade.

Jack Bauer practically invented suicide bombers. Terrorists wanted to die on their own terms.

If you manage to sneak up on jack Bauer, you're a ghost, you're already dead

Ponyboy.............EPIC !!!

This was a great episode, and the scenes from next week make me think they are going to send this show off with a bang (no pun intended).

Bryzarro 3/30/2010 10:45:35 PM

Agreed Pony on all points!!  LOL!  Anyone who watches this show would not have the time to list out stupid complaints like that.

A episode in my opinion.  And why would it be a red flag to CTU if Dana had been a felon and changed her name.  She sold herself as a skilled government worker who worked into a high position in CTU.  Does a criminal act as a youth dictate you can no longer work for the Governement in the future?

animefanjared 3/31/2010 3:04:16 PM

I think in general CaptAmerica's rant is a tad ridiculous.  As others have pointed out, pretty much every complaint mentioned has happened on the show before, I don't see why they should suddenly bother you.

However, I have to give him two points:

1) I agree, I find it hard to believe on a show where we make a habit of breaking the chain of command at every possible opportunity, the one time the underlings don't think for themselves is when they are ordered to kill their own people to turn over a diplomat the President was working with not even 12 hours ago.  I think the double standard fans have about this is ridiculous.  Whenever Jack (or someone else who is working with Jack) blatantly disregards orders, we accept it, but when disregarding said orders doesn't directly help Jack we start talking about the "chain of command."  You can't have it both ways.  Either everyone should be breaking the chain of command, or the show gets a lot more realistic by having the government fire such blatantly insubordinate characters like Jack, Chloe, Tony, et. all.

2)  It has bothered me for weeks that we spent roughly 4 hours watching a Russian die from radiation poisoning after being exposed to the rods, but the IRK people have been moving them around completely unprotected and not gotten so much as a burn.  Again, we can't have it both ways.  Either everyone dies from radiation poisoning, or no one does.

Oh, and 3) They keep saying the bomb will iradiate a 40 block radius of Manhattan.  I'm no nuclear physicists, but I would think that Manhattan is geographically small enough that any kind of sizeable nuclear accident would render the whole island uninhabitable, not just part of it.

lracors 4/1/2010 7:28:39 AM

If Jack Bauer were to run the Indy 500 without a car... he would set a new record.  Also, yah i have to agree who would live on the island at all once the dirty bomb would go off.  The Nuclear Rods is a good point, but then again we don't really see how well encased they are.  The Dana story line is just the absolute "Kim" worst and then to make her the mole... i'm like WTF again... another mole... who does the hiring for CTU and how crappy is their screening process... and wouldn't you go back like decades to find out everything about the person... I know that when you get hired by the FBI they look as far back as they can for sensitive areas... Finally the General turning to the weasly Chief of Staff is just terrabad... however we do get to see more Jack butt kicking, except for the dumb ass black ops guy who butts Jack with his gun instead of shooting him in the back... FAIL.  Overall i have to say a solid B .  This is not the best year of 24 but it does rank as one of the better one's (year's 3 and 6 are by far the worst and the Kim sections of year 2... shutter).

makabriel 4/1/2010 7:52:38 AM

Moles aren't necessarily created years back.  She could have easily turned after she was hired.

animefanjared 4/1/2010 9:13:35 AM

@ makabriel: While it's true she could have turned after being hired, I'd imagine for an agency as sensitive as CTU the government would do an extensive personality profile in addition to a background check to look for signs a person may not be entirely loyal to the country.

Also, I agree with both camps about her past indescretions.  I think that having commited a crime in the past doesn't necessarily prevent someone from being hired by the government, even for such sensitive work.  However, the show has been pretty clear that Dana's name change was not done through legal chanels so as to hide her felony past, and unless she did a stellar job of forging documentation of the "Dana Walsh" alias from her early life, the government should have noticed and gotten suspicious.  If the name change was done legally and there for anyone to see, the threats of exposing her wouldn't have worked because Hastings (at least) would have known all about it and decided he didn't care.

Plus, we can argue all we want about the plausibility of Dana being the mole, but let's focus on the big picture here: that development is about a million times more interesting than her damn ex-boyfriend blackmailing her!
