"24: 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM"

Remember last week when I mentioned how surprising a near Bauer free episode could be?  Well, this week we get to see just how bad a Bauer free episode can be.  Jack is hurt, some nonsense about rib fragments and such; he’s fought under worse circumstances.  The only thing Jack gets to do this episode is discover from his dead brothers’ slutty wife that his one time love Audrey (from last season) died in a car accident in China while she was trying to rescue him.  When he learns this he interrupts Chloe, who is diligently working to find a drone plane carrying a nuke, and tells her to stop what she’s doing and go to the archives and find Audrey’s file.  Jack’s willing to sacrifice his friends, his family, and himself for his country but he’ll sure let a nuke blow up in San Fran just to see some pictures of his dead girlfriend.  This is some poorly written melodrama, way out of character for Jack Bauer.  This episode felt way off balance, leaving so much of what came before waiting in the wings.  What happened to Martha, boy toy Aaron, and her near dead ex-husband ex-President Logan?  They were what made the last episode so much fun and now they are nowhere to be found.  The creators of the series have had a lot of trouble balancing all of the characters this season, something that wasn’t an issue in previous seasons.

This episode focuses on the dealings with Vice President Daniels who has taken over for comatose President Palmer.  Daniels is dead set on retaliating against….well who knows, they never actually say the name of the country.  Why is that?  They have no problem naming Russia and plenty of cities in the U.S., why not name the innocent country that Daniels has in his crosshairs?  Anyway, even after Jack and the really boring Doyle bring down the drone plane before the nuke goes off Daniels still gives the order to get the subs in place and launch a nuclear strike when ready.  Karen Hayes, reneging on her resignation, and Daniels’ pawn Lennox even registers complaints about this action to no avail.  Again, this just seems heavy handed and way to easy.  This will lead to Karen Hayes to convincing President Palmer’s sister to give the go ahead to revive the President even if it might kill him in order to prevent the nuclear attack.  This process was hinted at during the final minutes of the episode and confirmed in the previews for next week.

Oh yeah, back at CTU, Nadia Yassir was taken into custody because it was discovered that her workstation was utilized to help the terrorist mask the location of the drone plane when it took flight.  She gets tortured a bit by Doyle who just doesn’t make it much fun.  If somebody’s gonna do some torturing it has to be Jack, or he at least has to be pulling the strings.  I’m surprised he wasn’t brought in for this since he was at CTU already.  It feels like the creators are really trying to push this Doyle character and even with the hints to his past in Denver I just could care less about him.

7:00 to 8:00 pm was mostly just a borefest.  I know defenders will say things are familiar because it’s part of the 24 formula and that’s just a poor defense.  The 24 formula is Jack kicks ass against terrorists and he does it all in 24 hours.  Other than that we’ve had some fantastic and unique storylines over the past several seasons.  This season, even though I’ve enjoyed much of it, is mostly just a rehash of things the series has done before, and done better.  The next big sequence of having a doctor wake someone who is in critical condition even though it might kill them?  Been done on this series before.  What are the writers doing, saving the good stuff for the feature film that’s on the way? I may have made that argument before too.  At any rate, the writers better get Jack back into action next week and start doing something that surprises the audience again because way too much of this season has been predictable and been there done that.  There is potential, the whole family arc for Jack was quite interesting but we haven’t seen Jack’s father in way too long.  I also believe Jack’s brother was killed off way to quickly.  I was really enjoying seeing the architect of Jack’s woes from last season being his brother.  How much of that was his father truly involved in?  We might see Jack’s father come back into the fold because he or Jack’s brother had something to do with Audrey’s death.  Now if Gray was still alive and Jack learned that his brother was responsible wouldn’t that make a cat and mouse game between them interesting?  Anyway, we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed that the writers are planning something really exciting for us!

What I want to know is why did Ricky "The Ricker" Schroder change his name to Rick in the 90's for NYPD Blue and then back to Ricky for 24. It's so hard to get child stars to make it as an adult and I'm glad he's getting the chance... though does anyone else think he's the traitor at CTU? I'd be more impressed if it was Chloe... that would be cool... maybe.

The traitor is probably Milo as they made a big deal about him using his password to help her keep working at her station. I agree this season has been mostly retread. It's still better than almost anything on TV but it's been better, much better. Why is it that in these shows or movies the Military leaders no matter what are all about let's blow 'em up. Launch! Launch! I wish sometimes they would be given more credit for rationale mixed in with their verve for battle. Even a Military leader would cry foul at the VP's intention to launch anyway after averting the strike on SF. Also the VP, just because he wants to, being able to authorize an invasion and a nuclear strike on his say so is pretty far fetched. Even in crisis there would be serious protocol's on a decision like that. If they're only going to stop it by reviving Palmer to stave the order (and probably croak soon after) then that's seriously lame! Where the hell is Martha, she rocks! How dare they leave us with her stabbing Logan and not even showing up in this episode? I don't mind Ricky, he's been OK so far. As long as he doesn't detract from Jack's role as the action orientated protagonaist. This show is Bauer baby. Accept no substitute.

I have to agree with Stephen's comment about the producers of 24 never mentioning the names of countries in the Middle East. It's annoyed me from the git-go. Granted, 24 exists in a fictional universe all its own - but we know countries like the USA, Russia, China, Mexico, the UK all exist in the 24 world, but they always dance around any specific country names when dealing with the Middle East. I'm sure the producers have their reasons for doing this. But it comes across as somewhat insulting to the viewer - I feel like the producers think the viewers have the historical/political/geographical knowledge of the average person on Leno's "Jay Walking" segment, when the average 24 viewer is probably better informed about world events than the average person. An easy and acceptable solution would be to just create some fictional country names. If they don't want to get specific for politically correct reasons, then make something up. But at least give us something other than "your country" and "his country" and "their country." It's getting old.

No chance Audrey's actually dead.

I liked this episode. It was pretty entertaining. I liked the White House intrigue and Chloe had some fun stuff to do.
nax37 3/21/2007 12:17:03 PM
The problem with the white house plot is it's way too far fetched. The VP orders a nuclear strike on Unnamed Mideastern Country based on what? He has zero evidence suggesting UMC's government is behind or supports the terrorists.
lister 3/21/2007 1:15:47 PM
Well, yeah, the guy is a Cheney-level dick. But he doesn't have much of a problem getting his wishes while everyone is in terrorist freak-out mode. So it doesn't seem unrealistic to me.
miko34 3/21/2007 1:31:04 PM
I don't think it's as far fetched as people think... I mean our government doesn't really make the right decisions. This war is costing how many lives? And they're spending like over $410 billion dollars already... that's more than I make in a month! So... they can't be that smart. But yeah... something's not right with this season, but that's okay... 5 out of 6 ain't bad.
nax37 3/21/2007 1:55:02 PM
But there's a difference between our governments decisions about the war in Iraq and 24's VP's decision to NUKE ANOTHER COUNTRY with no hard evidence. How are Russia and China and Korea and all of Europe going to respond to that? It's even more ridiculous when you remember that the president KNOWS Assad didn't attack Palmer. Now he's just nuking the Middle East because he hates Muslims.
lister 3/21/2007 4:10:41 PM
Not so different. Maybe he has another agenda. Maybe he wants to destabilize the region so that his friends at a megacorporation can reap millions of dollars by investing in rebuilding the region or moving their corporate headquarters there. Stranger things have happened.
