Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer will soon have the creative freedom to say something beyond "Dammit" when he's dealing lead to terrorists or being tortured by them. While a 24 film has been in the development stages for some time now, Variety reports that 20th Century Fox's film and TV studios are officially moving forward with their plans to bring the series to the big screen.

Screenwriter Billy Ray (State of Play) has been set to write the script for the feature film after his pitch, which reportedly involves Jack going to Europe, received praise from the series' producers. The script idea was reportedly passed through "24" star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland, who is reportedly eager to turn the series into a feature franchise.

There are some factors which could place a hold on this feature film. Namely the fate of the series in televised form. Fox hasn't decided whether to order a ninth season of the show.

I don't like the sound of this so far.  This works better as a tv show so far to me.  And I like the pacing better.

Good news!!??!!  I guess.  I've been pretty "meh" on this season after a fantastic 2 first episodes.  Although after last nights ending i do see promise.

My friend and I have a theory that the 24 crew are setting the stage for Jack to pass the torch and they are testing it out by not having him be the ultimate focus through episodes.  If this is true then I can see the movies as a way to introduce whom ever may be the new "24" agent when Kiefer decides to exit.

Just my thoughts.

24 has been losing ground in the ratings. And losing against Heroes of all shows that doesn't bode well for a ninth season. The show has played out creatively it's had a good run it's time to move on.

They need to start the movie with the same intro that was used for The Simpsons movie, "I can't believe we're paying to see something we get on TV for free! If you ask me, everybody in this theater is a giant sucker! Especially you! "

Unless the action and violence is off the charts I'm skipping this and if it involves a big thread from the tv series I'm skipping it too cause I've only watched like 2 and half days.

More 24 is only good news.  The tv movie they did before season 7 was great so I'm sure they can pull it off on the big screen.  And at least they'll have more freedom as far as more mature content.  They'll probably keep it PG-13 but I would love to see an R-rated 24.  The first time Jack drops the F-bomb will be funny.

They should have left TV when they originally planned to do it after the 6th season...I don't know what happened that they kept it on TV other than money but it may be too late now.

I think it can be a great two hour movie...you can cut all the fat out like Katie Sakoff's drama side story stuff this season and just focus on Jack and him trying to save the world.   I agree ddiaz, it will probably be PG-13 since it was a TV show for so long but a R would fit better.

Yeah I don't know why every season there has to be one lame ass drama side story that really doesn't make sense.  It doesn't ruin the show for me but everytime they cut to scenes dealing with Dana I just want to punch her stupid head.  Seriously, like she couldn't have simply gone to her bosses and say this dumbass redneck is trying to blackmail me, please take care of it.  Or just tell her sniper fiance to go take care of them.  He runs a covert ops strike squad for pete sake, I'm sure he could handle two trailer trash thieves.  Maybe they just needed to give her a better reason to go along with it instead of just saving her reputation and job.

So would the movie be "2.4"?

animefanjared 2/9/2010 1:28:40 PM

I think a 24 feature film is inherently against the premise of the series.  The big hook for the show has been the realtime aspect (which admittedly they only follow when it serves them).  While a bigscreen version would allow them to cut crap like this Dana Walsh blackmail BS or infamous storylines like Teri's amesia or Kim and the cougar, you then almost have to violate the realtime rules because no one wants to spend even 5 minutes of a 2 hour movie watching Jack drive from one place to another.

And I too have wondered if they have toyed with the idea of making another character the center of 24.  While I don't think it would be the same show without Jack, I have to admit I find Renee Walker to be far more compelling than Jack this season, to the point where I can imagine watching a show about her.
