So here it is: the final two hours of one of the most action packed television series to ever have been broadcast. There are maybe two current series that can truly be considered feature film quality. One of those is LOST and the other is this show, 24. Jack has sacrificed nearly everything dear to him over the past eight years. All he has left is his daughter and Grandchild. He thought he had something special with Renee and he thought he had a President he could believe in leading a country he loves. Within a few short hours, Renee was murdered and Jack learned that his President was embroiled in a global conspiracy of lies and murder. Jack had snapped in the beginning of this hour and only a familiar face, the one constant left in Jack’s life, had the ability to bring him back. It’s fitting for it all to have come down to Chloe and Jack, but I digress.

Every law enforcement agency in the country had an order to shoot to kill when it came to Jack Bauer and rightfully so, considering the massacre he made of Novakovich and his men. Knowing that the series was coming to an end could have weighed heavy on the proceedings had the producers and Sutherland himself not talked so publicly about the fact that a feature film is already in the works. With that in mind, there’s no doubt that Jack would survive so the ride to the end had to be fairly thrilling. While what came next was thrilling some of the big shocks didn’t come from Jack at all. He gets his share of classic Jack moments here though. The best moment in this episode has to be when Jack forces Pillar at gunpoint to sew up an open wound in Jack’s gut. This scene is thrilling and over the top, just what you’d want from 24. In the previous hour Jack learned about Novakovich in a really clever way and when he uses that same trick again to determine his next moves it still manages to be surprising and dramatic. Jack’s magic bag of tricks has some really cool stuff in it including of course, a sniper rifle.

The President and Logan did all they could to keep the conspiracy under wraps but inevitably the story just had to get out. There too many leaks from jack and now from the reporter that the President had taken into custody. With all of the excitement around Jack’s movements the intensity between Dalia and the President had to be the most riveting part of the episode. The President, like Jack, has crossed many lines and when Dalia confronts her about the Russian’s involvement in the death of her husband the President uses the only tool left in her arsenal, a threat of war.

In this episode, the President’s rage was just under the surface while Jack’s appeared to dissipate quite a bit in favor of a heavy burden and sadness. Even though the cliffhanger was a little underwhelming, the episode overall did a fantastic job of setting up the last hour of the show.

3:00pm – 4:00pm

Chloe talked Jack down off the ledge as it were when he was setting up to assassinate the Russian president. She stopped him from committing another murder in the name of revenge. She made Jack realize that he had gotten revenge and justice all twisted up in his mind. In true Jack fashion his alternative plan was just as radical as simply shooting Suvarov except that he instead got Chloe to shoot him. Once in a while Mary Lynn Rajskub got an opportunity to show just how great an actor she is and this scene, and the final one of the series, both are such opportunities. She and Jack have been through a lot over the last eight seasons and now he asked her to potentially kill him. The scene was very dramatic even though we all knew Jack wasn’t getting killed off.

The final hour of the series found Pillar and Logan grasping at threads to try and keep the conspiracy intact. The one failing of the second half of this season was that Logan never seemed to have any real motivations. He and Pillar discussed helping President Taylor spend the political credit that she would get from the signing of the agreement. Usually these types of villains have some more specific goal in mind. The problem was that the writers wanted Logan back in the picture because he’s a great character not because he had any true relevance to the story they were plotting. There was this big secret that he was holding over the Russians. It was revealed that the secret was nothing more than a bluff but the plot stopped there.

Often 24 ends with a huge bang and that’s always entertaining but the end of this season and the end of the series, offered up a more character driven finale. Logan made his last stand and the President, after seeing Jack pour out his heart came to her senses. The pressure of doing what she knew was wrong for so long obviously played a big part in Taylor changing gears at the last minute too. There are some solid dramatic moments, not the least of which was Jack’s near execution but overall this was one of the quietest season finales of the series.

Before the President turned herself over to the authorities for what she did, the President saved Jack and gave him some time to get out of the country. She told Jack that Unites States authorities will be after him as well as the Russians so he had to get out of the country and go into hiding. So beaten, shot up, and broken emotionally, Jack had just a few minutes to say goodbye to his only constant, Chloe. It was a depressing end for a hero but at the same time, Jack had to pay in this way for what he did. Jack has left the country before but this exodus was more complete. The scene was sad enough between Jack and Chloe as they said goodbye to each other but when she had the screen of Jack shut off, it felt like Chloe was trying to rip off a band-aid in a way. She had to do it quick or she wouldn’t be able to do it. Jack is sort of like Rambo, the unsung hero ready to fight for what’s right and never get the credit he deserves. With that in mind, this was a fitting end for him.

These last two hours, like the season as a whole, weren’t perfect but the things that were great, were really great. These characters and their edge of your seat stories will be missed.

Man, with all the bad presidents in this series, the US is on track to become a backwater country in no time! Hey Afghanistan, can you spare a dime??? Woe is US and Russia now that you let Jack Bauer hide in the shadows and heal. Now his damage points are going to grow...and grow...and grow...

flickman37 5/25/2010 2:24:36 PM

Perfect send off.  Jack needs to be on his own, and with the US and Russia looking for him, should make for an interesting movie...

What a great end to a great series.  I enjoyed every minute of it.  Jack's last words to Chloe.  His nearly getting killed.  The fact that he is now a fugitive of the U.S. and Russia... wow words cannot describe just how great and ending this was and befitting remaining true to the series Jack won but at what horrible cost.  Below is my rundown of 24 as a whole and my overall grade for the series.  4 star scale.

1 = 3 ½ *’s The most personal of all the seasons as Jack is pitted against enemies bent on personal revenge against him.

2 = 3 *’s The most uneven series the primary storyline of a stolen nuclear weapon is 4*s however; the storyline with his daughter dragged and was completely unrelated to the main storyline.

3 = 2 *’s Jack goes up against drug lords, that leads to biological terror. This year only get’s good near the end of it’s run (literally the last 6 episodes) and we were bogged down by having his daughter inexplicably in the mix.

4 = 3 ½ *’s One of the best seasons since year 1. A variation of a nuclear threat that upped the anti so high the entire country was at risk.

5 = 4 *’s The best season, more on the personal level as Jack is eventually pitted against corrupt forces within the U.S. government.

6 = 1 ½ *’s The worse season, bloated, convoluted, not compelling and really not much to redeem it too much melodrama.

7 = 3 ½ *’s The 2nd best season of 24, had Jack go up against a secret organization bent on secretly launching biochemical weapons in the USA all in the name of money.

8 = 3 *’s A well done season to finish the series, a very slow start involving a potential middle east peace agreement and presidential assassination threat that eventually lead Jack to go against the world… literally.

Average Series Score = 3 *’s

Jack Bower = kicking ass and personal sacrifice. A great ending to the series. I hope the writers for the movie exclude his daughter. She's to damn annoying

Awesome ending to the series....While the announcment of the 24 movie kinda took away from some of the tension to if Jack would actually died, I think the overall execution was awesome.  Jacks final conversation with Chloe was well done and the final look into the camera was great.

I'm glad Logan didn't die as I was hoping that after everything he had done in the series from the President Palmer assasination to everything he did this season that he would be brought to justice and made to pay for what he did.

President Taylor admitting the truth to the world was something I saw coming but still made an impact nonetheless.

Also, Armor Wearing Hockey Mask Jack for the win.

wait didn't logan die?  pretty sure he shot himself in the head unless i just missed where it said he survived.

Now this is how you end a series. I loved this show and I'm sorry to see it go, but I am glad they are making a movie. Wonder what the title of the movie will be? Maybe 2 or 2 1/2. Maybe 3 if were lucky. I know I could sit through a 3 hour 24 movie.

I liked how at the beginning of the show they had Kiefer Sutherland thank us fans for watching 24 all this time. I thought that was a nice touch.

@johnconstantine: They was one part where they said that he will probably survive, but that there would be permanent brain damage. Or something to that effect.
I don't think anyone will notice the difference with ol' Logan.

Great ending to a really good series. I know some people got tired of 24 but now that its over, I'll miss it. No More 24, no more Lost! Its the end of an era. They need to create some sort of spin-off, like CTU or something without the clock.

Jack Bauer is one of the only men wanted by all 3 super powers. The U.S.,China and Russia. Where the hell is he going to go? Back to Africa maybe?

I wonder if they will pick up with him on the run, in the movie?

Excellent ending.  Bring on the movie.  Mondays won't be the same next January.

I'm in the minority here. But, I wanted Jack to have a happy ending.

There was a time when a happy ending, that wrapped up all of threads in a story, was considered typical and all too common place. Now the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction. Now, every ending has to be ambiguous, murky and bleak. It's a little old and predictable. They should have went the other way to end 24.

Jack has gone through hell for his country. That character deserves a better send off than that.

And before you guys bring up the "24 movie" as a way to to end everything, remember the film isn't a done deal. It's still in development. And, as we all know, anything can happen to a film still in development. It could never see the light of day.

They should have ended it on a positive note. And maybe use the movie to tell the story of what happened to Prez. Palmer after he was poisoned at the end of Day 2. Bring back all the old cast members and do it up big!
