30 DAYS OF NIGHT: Blood Trails

Well I’ve never reviewed a thirteen minute film before but there’s a first time for everything. As reported previously on Mania.com, Ghost House Pictures and Fear.Net are putting out a seven episode prelude to the big screen “30 Days of Night” feature film which opens in October. The mini-series will be available beginning today, September 13, on Fear.Net/Video On Demand. Each episode runs approximately 3 – 5 minutes in length. Having watched the first four episodes last night, my first couple of thoughts are: Frantic pace and one hell of a lot of blood! Spoiler alert from here forward!

The mini-series is set in New Orleans and centers on a drug addict named George. George runs jobs for a Judith, a vampire hunter. George is trying to make enough money to get himself and his girlfriend, Jenny, out of the slum they are living in. George is sent to receive a data disc from a man in a back alley, yet when he arrives, he finds the disk smashed on the ground and the man lying near death in a pool of his own blood. In his dying moments, the man writes a series of numbers in blood on George’s arm. These numbers allow a couple of computer hackers who are also working for Judith to break into the Vampire’s network. They discover the vampires are using the internet to coordinate an attack and discover a date of November 18th, although they don’t recognize the significance of the date. It will matter little as the hackers won’t live long enough to do anything further and George finds himself literally running for his life from the vampires.

Director Victor Garcia has certainly managed to capture the essence of Steve Niles’ vampires. If you never read the graphic novels, these are not the sauve, sexy vampires of an Ann Rice novel, but truly horrific creatures with rows of razor sharp teeth and hands which end in deadly claws. Their visages are quite something to behold! Obviously with a medium like this there isn’t much time for introductions or character development. The action starts from the opening frames and barely lets up until the end. You can’t make much of a call on the performances as they were short and none except for the George character are on-screen for more than a couple of minites.

That aside, the mini-series truly does capture the scope of IDW’s comic books extremely well. These vampires are strong, fast, and vicious. The gore flows freely in the 13 minute offering, culminating with the beheading of one of the hackers as her partner watches the whole event over a web cam. Great stuff! And this is a great idea to kick up interest in what should be one of the best horror films of the year. For all the information about the series, visit Fear.net.

well supposedly the 13 plus minute long offering was four episodes running together. If they are 3 - 4 minutes long that makes sense. If Not shoot DKC who provided the preview.
