On July 31st, 300 arrives on DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc from Warner Home Video. Based on the graphic novel from Frank Miller, 300 is an epic action-adventure about the 300 Spartan warriors led by the heroic King Leonidas who challenged Xerxes and his massive Persian army at the ancient Battle of Thermopylae. Facing insurmountable odds, they fought to the death to defend their honor and freedom, inspiring all of Greece to unite against the enemy.
From director Zack Snyder (upcoming The Watchmen, Dawn of the Dead), 300 combines live action with virtual backgrounds and features performances from Gerard Butler (The Phantom of the Opera, Reign of Fire), Lena Headey (The Brothers Grimm, The Cave) David Wenham (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King)and Rodrigo Santoro (Love Actually, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle).
The 2-Disc Special Edition and hi-definition versions are loaded with over 90 minutes of thrilling extras, including additional scenes and revealing featurettes on the real-life Spartans. With the HD DVD Combo, experience the entire film with “blue screen” picture-in-picture running throughout the feature and special commentary by Zack Snyder, plus an exclusive strategy game “Vengeance and Valor.”

300 will be available on Single Disc at $28.98 SRP in both widescreen and full frame formats. The 2-Disc Special Edition DVD will be available in widescreen format for $34.99 SRP. The HD DVD Combo will be available at $39.99 SRP and the Blu-ray Disc version will be available at $34.99 SRP.

Hey! What ever happened to the weekly DVD release round-up here at Mania? I looked forward to it every week.

And so it begins... They start dropping stuff from the DVD releases to encourage people to by the HD versions. Seems like the Webisodes and Who were the Spartans? should fit on a second disk set. Put me in the "non-early adopter" group for new technology. Especially when there're two formats duking it out ala VHS/Betamax. As good as HD looks, it's not as much of a quality jump like VHS to DVD to make me want to ugrade my library. That said, this might be a movie I wait to buy in a few years on HD DVD (or Blu Ray) once the format wars dies down. This movie will visually pop in HD, more so that most films.

Myrddin, you don't have to wait. You can by a Hd disc that can also be played on a regular DVD player. They have that combo for this movie. Plus I think the players will be able to play both Blu and HD after the war is over. There are already several models that do. Even though I gave started to think the same way as you, I might not wait to get this one. But I'll probably just buy the regular DVD.

I think people will rip anything from the HD's and Blu Ray's for the extras and post them online anyway.

Bring back the "DVD Shopping List" that came out every Tuesday. I rely on that for genre DVD releases of the week. It was the best weekly column on this site!
