Ok, I have said this since I saw the first screen shots... this movie WILL NOT do well at the box office!!  Now, before people get defensive, I'm not saying it won't be a good movie, but I am saying it won't do well, probably not even making it's money back.  I have worked with Regal Cinemas for 14 years now, and I have seen the trends, and what makes money, and what doesn't.  Here's the bottom line.. ready for the big secret..  WOMEN.  The movies that are a financial success draw women.  Women will not only spend the money to watch the film, but most likely bring a husband/date with them.  That's the reason Titanic was a huge success, women wanted to watch it, over and over... the majority of men, not so much.  I see the trends every day, it's part of my life, and all I'm saying is, women aren't clammering to see this movie as much as guys are.

Before you move on with the hate train, just let me say, I want to see this movie.  I think it looks amazing, and I'm looking forward to it.  But, I also don't think it takes the multi-millions of dollars to make a great movie, as I also loved Paranormal Activity.  This movie will break even at best, but will probably lost money.

And before you all start saying 'I'm a women/girl, and I want to see it', and 'My girlfriend/wife says she wants to see it'... yeah, I'm not saying ALL and EVERY woman, I'm just saying the majority.  This is how the Box Office works.  Again, there are a few exceptions, as I'm sure someone will try to bring up to discredit what I'm saying, but overall, if you follow the logic, this movie will not make $500 million, it just won't happen.

No hate train here Divo...you are entitled to your opinion.  You'll find out soon enough but 3-D sales alone are going to pump in the money...if it is a great movie, word of mouth will make it a lot more money.  Then of course, there are DVD sales and rentals after that.  Common sense says it will make money.

I don't think it will make 500 mil in the U.S. but World Wide it will make over that.  I guess we can begin our countdown and talk again in about a month to see who is right.   If I had odds in Vegas it was going to be a hit I would take them.

This movie will top 500million worldwide and I believe it'll end up around the 600mil. mark, throw in dvd sales and all the side contracts and Fox will be in the black soon enough. Once they announce the sequel you'll know they made their money back, count on it.

Plus all the critical ptaise won't hurt a bit

Round of applaus Hanso, you need to write more articles on this site. Unfortunately, and I'm sure you know this, the haters as you can already tell are still gonna' hate. Iron Man 2 is going to be a great movie, no doubt. But it ain't Avatar. And Avatar is now, Iron Man is tomorrow. Avatar is a a science fiction fantasy adventure that has got the attention of both the audience and the critics, movies like this are rare. And I'll agree that the box office is going to be awsome for Iron Man 2, but Tron Legacy, really?

Divo, I used to work for Regal cinemas, not for 14 years but for about 6 and I think you are wrong, this movie will probably break even and maybe even turn a slight profit, but the point your missing is this film is the first of a hopeful franchise. Terminator 2 flattened the original even when you adjust inflation and the same for Aliens. I'm sure that is what the studio is going for. Get people interested and hook them in to come back for a sequel which with Cameron's record will no doubt deliver.

While I disagree with Divo that it won't make it's money which I think it will and more, I do partly agree that women really help a movie's BO big time.  Just look at Twilight and it's opening.  But I think there's more to it.  It's the films that draws every demographic that make it big.  Women and children.  Most genre films automatically havethe male audience interested, but when you add something that attracts women who wouldn't normally see genre films, and that is ok for kids, you've got a blockbuster on your hands.

My wife is a perfect example.  While she hates most romancy chick flicks (thank God) she also is not interested in most sci-fi/fantasy/super hero films.  The exceptions are films like Dark Knight, Harry Potter, Star Trek, and Iron Man.  Other than HP, it blew my mind that she enjoyed the other 3 so much.  But they all had something that allowed her to enjoy them despite her usual dislike for the genre.  Unfortunately (for her in my opinion) Avatar doesn't interest her at all, so if a large percentage of the female population are like her, Avatar will be missing out on that demographic, thus not doing as well as it could have, and Divo will have made his point.  But I still think it will do VERy well at the box office.

Well written and funny, Hanso.  Exactly what I expect from you.  Great job, and congrats on the intro to Mania.com writing.  (Or at least congrats to the P.I. you hired to get those photos of Jarrod.  Does he have a wide stance?)

Shac - The haters can only legitimately hate on two things when it comes to Avatar, 1.  The video game and 2. that awful Leona Lewis song.  Any other hate is insanity.

Speaking of the haters, who just look plain silly right now. ,I've never understood the Avatar hate because Cameron hasn't failed yet.  Shouldn't people fail before we doubt?  I didn't hate on George Lucas till after The Phantom Menace not when he announced he was doing it.

I honestly don't care how much Avatar makes as long as it rocks , which I know it will.  Other than sequel talk what difference does it make for us?  Though if Avatar owns and Cameron does a sequel, with the man's track record on sequels then Avatar 2 may stop the world on it's tracks.  I want to see Cameron do The Dive before Avatar 2 anyway.

Alls I know it will be getting me and Mrs.Hanso's money.

@Cap - lol, my PI is very good man, gonna have to contact him if I want to get something else up on the site.  I had to turn in all the evidence as part of the deal for this article so I don't have any bargaining chips for a second go around.

Well done, Hanso!

All of your points are valid, but I gotta go with my gut - the trailer just doesn't look that great.  To be fair though, I think that my feelings are a prime example of hype backlash.  When something is built up to such a level ... and then you finally see that trailer and say "Oh.  Well that just looks okay." it kind of puts a damper on things.

That being said, I'm hearing positive reviews and... hey lets face it: if Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants was in IMAX 3D, I'd probably go see it.  There's something to be said for a big-budget sci-fi blockbuster and you're right: It's not like Cameron has really let us down in the past.

And of course, I liked that terrible GI Joe movie, so I'm certainly not one to judge.

And once again - great article Hanso!
