Nicolas Cage as Ming, he looked the part in that faux trailer for Grindhouse as FuManchu

Liam Neeson.... mmmmmm possibly, he'd be decent.  But his is a seriously filled schedule, everyone wants Liam for everything.  I'm looking at someone with a more open schedule.

Can't help it, it's the teacher in me:  Officially Mr. Chow's name is as you say, with traditional chinese names having the family name (Chow) first and the the personal name (Yun-Fat) afterwords, i.e. Smith John.  But he'll usually answer to the euro-american version of personal name first, Yun-Fat Chow.  Class dismissed, leave your apple on the teachers desk as you exit.  :-)

I first have to agree about the soundtrack, Muse was the first band that came to mind.

My casting:

Flash - Noone we've ever heard of. hate to keep beating that dead Chris Penn/Hugh Jackman horse but it worked.

Ming the Merciless - Every Monday night your local Fox station offers up a character with little mercy played by Hugh Laurie.

Princess Aura - Michelle Trachtenberg the spoiled little pop star she played in Six Feet Under would be great for this role.

Dale Arden - Fruza Balk's comeback role.

im too bored and sleepy for the rest.

The original was made when even the idea of human flight was new and space travel was a hazy fantasy little understood by the public. So how do you translate a story about a fantasy of 30's spaceflight that has become reality in the 21st century?

My preference would be take the original concept and translate into a work that makes sense today. We still can have aliens, certainly in the later work which posits interstellar travel. We can still have the brilliant scientist who is far ahead of today's science.  We can also have damsels in distress. No problem. Just don't forget we know a lot more about the universe and science than we did back then. No need to throw that away.

Just don't do what others have done, which is camp it up. Remember the original is campy because it was all they could do that was entertaining back then. We have more context now.  Use it!!

I don't care what anybody thinks of me for this...but I liked the SciFi Flash Gordon series...for it's one season. I believe it started out a little rough, but it was fun, and it was really getting interesting by the end. I would have liked to have seen more. Ok, fine, it's a guilty pleasure for me.

Yeah, Syfy's Flash Gordon got better as it porgressed.  It went from absolutely dismal to kind of entertaining. Unfortunately, by that time nobody was watching it any more.

Let's face it, the episode where Dale had to make sure Flash's friend didn't have any fun at his brother's wedding so he wouldn't sucumb to a Mongo disease was a new low for episodic scifi.

This is a really well thought out article.  I'm going to save it...and use it as a matrix to see how the film fares against these criteria.

This is the kind of writing I really appreciate and rarely see on sites other than Mania.

Can't wait to see Flash and hope to see more solid writing and analysis like this on Mania.

I loved the 80's version and hated the Sy-fy channel version. I was thirteen years old when the 80"s version came out and now my kids, 18yrs and 15yrs love it. That movie helped introduce me to my best friend and we've been like brothers ever since. Anyway, I would like to see the remake taken seriously, drop the camp and please don't set it in the 1930's, set in the present so we can relate to the heroes. Also, action films of that period rarely make it at the box office. I'm in favor of a gritty, realistic Flash but also in favor of just a fun adventure. I would hope they'll stick with the same look of the 80"s version as far as the costumes, spaceships etc. Casting is the most important thing for me. I do NOT want a scrawny guy playing Flash. He doesn't have to be a bodybuilder, but he does need to be imposing. As far as Ming I want someone that looks evil and merciless. Basically just don't do a Beverly Hills 90210 type cast. Otherwise I'm stoked for a remake.
