Don't agree completely with the Independence Day conclusion, binary code would be a basic and as far a firewalls and anivirus go, this was a hive culture using telepathy.  In a culture like this there may never be a reason to ever build a firewall if no one is trying to take more than his share, why bother. The idea of protecting the computer networks against members of your own society wouldn't even occur.  Hence no firewalls or antiviruses at all, and who knows about protocols and such if there was only one type of system, it would necessarily be very open and accessible.  Heck in a computing evironment like that, the little basic viruses we would write on store computers back in the early days to keep typing nines continuously, might tie up their computers.

What about when Jack Bauer set a Secure Digital (SD) Card into it's "Self Destruct" mode and it blew up.  I hope my camera never does that
