5 Toy Dilemmas from Empire to Jedi

No Han and Jabba who?

If you were blessed enough to have Star Wars in your life as kid, it was an incredible time. Each movie brought forth tons of new figures; each with just a hint of who they actually were. As a kid, your Bossk figure took center stage when he arrived. After the movie was released, we saw how much screen time he actually got. This pushed Bossk back to the supporting characters but for a time, anything in your imagination was possible. The end of Empire Strikes Back to the beginning of Return of the Jedi was a strange time. The soon to be trilogy was open ended. Was Han going to live? Who was this Jabba the Hutt Vader spoke of. Was Luke going to move in on Leia since Han was out of the picture? The following is Mania’s 5 Toy Dilemmas from Empire to Jedi we faced as kids.

5. Han Solo is a Frozen Pop

With Han Solo taken off to who knows where the older brother of your group was suddenly faced without a character to be. Did he resort to being just Chewbacca now? Did he even bother to be Lando? No Han Solo meant your adventures were now pretty lame. Even in The Shadows of the Empire they had to create Dash Rendar to make things interesting.

4. Luke had No Lightsaber

Of course we know that he eventually constructed a new one. In our minds for that three year time gap, Luke was without that thing that made him special. There were no other Jedi left so how was he going to get one? My friends and I always had Luke head back to Bespin, and get his lightsaber back. Oddly enough, Timothy Zahn sent characters back for Luke’s hand. That however is another story.

3. Jabba the What?

Star Wars Toys with Star Wars Paradoxes

Vader tells Fett that he can take Solo to Jabba the Hutt. Greedo wanted to take Han to Jabba as well. All right, so who is Jabba the Hutt? Was he a Rodian like Greedo? Perhaps he is some big dude with sweet honnies dancing for his pleasure. The point being: we didn’t know. This created a huge dilemma as there was no one to rescue Han from.

2. Who the F is Admiral Ackbar?

One of the first figures to come out via a mail offer for “Revenge of the Jedi” was Ackbar. He couldn’t hold and blaster and came with some weird probe device. The Emperor was another mail away figure, but he was pretty self explanatory. Who was this fish dude and what were we going to do with him?

1. Luke Mackin on Leia

Come on, admit it. Before we knew the honest to Obi-Wan truth, we had Luke and Leia hooking up. Which is probably why the collective moan at the special editions re-release was so loud. It was our collective shame emoting for the first time.

Love this article, and it pretty much summed up my whole childhood "toy dilemma" between each movie.  Except, unfortunately, I had Jabba envisioned for many years as an unimpressive greenish-yellowish walrus-whiskered alien thanks to the Giant-Sized Marvel Comics Star Wars adaptation I had.

And, yes, Luke and Leia figures in the hands of a six year old... yikes!

Ha ha ha! This is awesome. I think I went through this toy dilemma as well back in the day. I was the right age to be a Star Wars geek with my action figures and playsets (age 8).

When I got back home after seeing Empire. My bro and I "froze" Han, so to speak, and then didn't know what to do with the further adventures after that. LOL!

I remember that when i was a kid, but after seeing 'Empire, I was MORE interested in the bounty hunters not less, I played with them even more...

Lucas never understood Boba Fett's popularity it seems and this is evident in what he did with the prequels... He REALLY missed a trick in not producing a bounty hunter TV series between the release of 'Empire and 'Jedi, it would have been HUGE i think, it would have had almost no competition, either!

DAMN IT ALL TO HELL!!!!!!

Just imagine the awkward silences at the christmas dinner table every time Luke asks Leia to pass the butter. The uncomfortable smiles as they make unintentional eye contact. They know they did it,.. naughty little jedi luke.

My buddy Lance and I both wanted to be Luke in his x-wing outfit. Their could not be 2 Lukes, that made no sense at all! So he concocted "Brother John." Luke's brother, who ended up working as a storm trooper for a while. My friend totally duped me! I played as Brother John for many weekends before I finally called BS on that. Why weren't either of us Han Solo? I guess niether of us could bear the judgement -we were nice kids, and Han was just so morally reprobate (thus, awesome).

I was only 6 years old when Empire came out.  I didn't fully grasp what had happened in the movie such as Frozen Han or one handed Luke.  Since I had so many Hot playsets plus an Imperial Walker, I just replayed the battle of Hoth over and over again.  I already had the Millenium Falcon, a TIE Fighter, and an X Wing plus the Imperial Star Destroyer, so I played space battles.  Sometimes, it is just better to be ignorant.

I never made the toys do what they did in the movies anyway. I had my own remakes I guess - before they became so popular - ha, ha. I also used to have crossovers before I knew what they were. They Star Wars universe versus the GI Joe universe.

This is true I turned Zartan into a Bounty Hunter and Snake Eyes into a Sith...

nice list have to admit i had some of the same dilemas and questions toy wise mostly what did jabba look like . and finaly when seeing hte toy was like om he is a giant slug.  that and how is Luke going to be a jedie with out a light saber. plus wound up trying to stick my Han in the freezer to recreate him being frozen in Carbonite. went through a few hans that way.
