Elfman to Score Spider-Man 3?

By: Randall Larson
Date: Monday, December 25, 2006

According to the Danny Elfman web site, Music for a Darkened People, Elfman may in fact write the music for Spider-Man 3, despite the stunning controversy behind-the-scenes on Spider-Man 2 that forced Elfman to leave the picture, with John Debney and Christopher Young contributing a few minutes of music each (the rest of the score was comprised of original Elfman cues, and re-used cues from the first score.). Word has come from the production that Elfman will indeed be on the picture, via co-producer Grant Curtis' blog, quoted on the Elfman web site:

Question: Hi Grant, thanks for paying attention to us, your blog is a great idea. I had questions about the music, but I didn't know where to ask them… Will Christopher Young use the main theme created by Danny Elfman at the beginning of the first two movies? Or will he compose a new one? Has the work on music started?

Grant Curtis: Tim, Danny and Chris Young are both working on the picture. We have yet to start actively working on the music, but we will start soon. Thanks for the questions.

No word from Danny himself on this, yet.

In additional Danny Elfman news, the composer’s score for Charlotte's Web is now available in stores, but Apple's iTunes store is offering two exclusive bonus tracks, "Fun Suite" and "Zuckerman's Speech" when you download the album from their store.

Wait, I thought Sam Raimi and Danny Elfman had a falling out over the direction of the music. Sam and Danny were having dinner over at Danny’s house and Sam disagreed with Danny about his musical style for the movie and Danny responded with something like, “Both you and yo’ mama can bend down and kiss my ass!” So Sam responded by kicking Danny’s dinner table over and saying, “Bring it, bitch!” This naturally led to a big fistfight, which ended when Sam gave Danny an open-handed chop to his Adam’s apple. The chop dislodged a collarbone and Danny had to wear a neck brace. Afterward, the two were no longer on speaking terms. At least that’s what Bob down the street told me, but I wouldn’t know, as I wasn’t there that day. So I guess they worked things out, huh?

The fight was about the direction of the music. Sam Raimi wanted it to go east at about 24 clicks an hour nonstop while Danny Elfman wanted it due northwest at a steady 55 clicks but at 8 hour intervals of stop and go.

I know my opinion don't really matter... but... I don't much care for Elfman's style of music. He and Tim Burton's styles go well together, I'm sure... which is probably why I don't care much about Tim Burton's direction style either. I think he should stick to those animation type movies (which I've never watched, by the way). I'm curious though... why is it that the DC comics to movies soundtracks have much better soundtracks?? They have memorable choruses (if you call it that, with the exception of the Tim Burton /Elfman Batman flicks that is), and you can easily associate the music with that movie's character, but we haven't been able to do that with any of the Marvel movies.
