Favreau and Downey talk "Iron Man"

Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau recently sat down with USA Today to talk about the upcoming film, Iron Man.

Bits from the article:

"We didn't want to just go with a safe choice," Favreau says. "The best and worst moments of Robert's life have been in the public eye. He had to find an inner balance to overcome obstacles that went far beyond his career. That's Tony Stark. Robert brings a depth that goes beyond a comic-book character who is having trouble in high school, or can't get the girl. Plus, he's simply one of the best actors around."

"I'm more diligent than I used to be," Downey says. "I want to show Jon he was right to have faith in me. Whatever questions might have arisen about my life weren't issues with him."

"He struggles with his lifestyle, he struggles with the drinking," Downey says of Stark. "He faces the same issues a lot of people do."

and thats why imho, I think he was one of the, if not the best choice for Iron Man, due to the fact he can realte to the demons and struggles Starks has also endured..maybe he will be nominanted for an Oscar..yeah that would be cool

Oscar?..... I don't think we're quite there yet, but I agree 100% that Downey was a very natural fit. It's like casting Jet Li as a martial artist, Tommy Lee as a dead beat or Paris Hilton as a tree... it just makes sense...
As far as the film, I am getting more excited daily.

Downey was an inspired choice for Tony Stark. Everything I've read and seen has me eagerly awaiting this film. We've seen the prototype armor. The trick will be seeing the armor in action. If that looks good, and the effects look good, Iron Man could wind up being the best comics adaptation yet.

If Robert Downey Jr. is nominated for an Oscar for Iron Man, it will cause the Earth to spin backwards, reversing time and destroy life as we know it. Nothing against him as an actor, but come on! An Oscar? For a Comic Book movie? No chance.

This is indeed good stuff, but a voice in the back of my head (I didn't wear my tinfoil hat today) makes me wonder that they might take this movie too seriously. That was my problem with Ang Lee's Hulk. You can have angst and pain and still have the childlike fun of a comic book. The Spider-Man movies prove that.
And nax37, the Earth probably already tilted off its axis when Sigourney Weaver got nominated for best actress for Aliens.

Very cool picture. There's a video out there today, too, that shows Stark pulling up to some event in his sports car, and getting out. Nothing overly exciting, but still got me all a-flutter. VERY cool! I can't wait! Downey was the perfect choice.

Star Wars was nominated for Best Picture.

Lord of the Rings won numerous Academy Awards, including Best Picture for Return of the King.

Really dramatic, critically praised, and publicly well-received fantasy has a chance at the Oscar.

Depending on how well they keep the drama to action ration in Iron Man, and especially on how low they keep the cheese factor, and Iron Man could pull it off for a nomination.

Likely? Nah. But just remember - Marisa Tomeii. Ben Affleck for WRITING. Sometimes strange things happen.

I will go on record right now and say that a movie based on a Super Hero Comic Book will never receive an Oscar for Best Picture, Best Actor/Actress, or Best Director. It just won't happen.

Good point Merin, but none of these were based on comic books.

Road to Perdition was based on a comic and got several nominations and actually won one.

nax37 is correct though because the people who vote for oscars are all stuffy pretentious snobs.
