THE DARK KNIGHT'S Batpod

The Los Angeles Times has posted an article and images about the new Batpod from THE DARK KNIGHT. It was designed by Nathan Crowley, who created the Batmobile for BATMAN BEGINS. Chris Corbould built it.

The Times talked with stuntman Jean-Pierre Goy who drove the pod for filmming. Goy told them it's outfitted with grappling hooks, cannons and machine guns. The steering is done by the rider's shoulders, since there aren't handlebars; and the rider lies belly down on the "bike."

Reminds me of the old Bat Bike toy from Kenner I had as a kid. Or at least the whole "lets put machine guns on the wheels" part. Not really the design...

Not sure I like the thing, but hey, maybe it'll have a practical purpose for being in the movie.

I agree, rudewordsmith. I know they like to go for the whole "realistic" angle for the series, but nothing about this design screams "Batman" at me.

The name "Batpod" is kinda silly, too, but that's me being nitpicky. Hopefully the design is integrated seamlessly into the film.

TheDarkRaven...And does the batmobile in Batman begins scream Batman too you? It seems to me that they are staying within the same concept of the first movie....

I agree mlaforcer. The big wheels of the "Bat Pod" make it appear that the cycle is actually part of the batmobile and deploys from the batmobile when Bayle needs to manuever in narrow alleys when the bigger batmobile just won't cut it.

I would agree with you benny, but I thought the origianl vehicle was for the military to jump rivers. Why would they need a bike for that?

Machine guns?! So how long until Nolan has Bats mowing people down gangsta style?

Not sure if this is legit, but it damn sure looks like it....

This is supposed to be the Batcycle, which if true, means that this Batpod is definately an escape vehicle that is part of the Batmobile, and not a vehicle in it's own right...

This makes me sad. I personally don't want to see Batman on a bike but it is what is. I wasn't big on the Tumbler until I saw Batman Begins so I'm hoping the same will happen with the Batpod when I see Dark Knight. Obviously they are staying true to the first film in terms of design, if Batman upgraded his suit it makes sense he would make upgrades to the Batmobile(if indeed the Pod is part of the Tumbler) and have new crime fighting vehicles. How long till the Batplane shows up huh? Anyway, cant wait for this film.

Mlaforcer: The Tumbler from Batman Begins actually does scream Batman at you if you read Miller's work. I can't remember if it was Year One or the Dark Knight Returns/Strikes Again but one of those has a similar looking Batmobile to the one on Begins.

looks like crap! I could design a better,
Batcycle than that!

I have complete and utter faith in Nolan that this will get pulled off despite the fact that the thought of the "Batpod" being an escape vehicle from the Tumbler to better manuever in alleys (as mentioned in posts here) gives me horrific flashbacks to that scene in Batman Returns where Penguin is driving the Batmobile and it strips down to about the size of the Batpod.

/shudder

And on a related rant... first, flying razor blades from the arms of the suit and next, machine guns on the Batcycle... just give me Azrael and get it over with!

But I digress. The first one was pulled off with uncanny success... so I will maintain faith the direction this will go.
