New Line Cinema has set D.J. Caruso to direct and Carl Ellsworth to write the comicbook adaptation of Pia Guerra, José Marzan, Jr. and Brian K. Vaughn's Y: THE LAST MAN.

The story revolves around a mysterious plague killing nearly all the world's male mammals overnight. A magician who's the only survivor among this group and his male pet monkey set out to find what may have wiped out the male chromosomes.

Chris Bender, JC Spink, Mason Novick and David Goyer will produce.

i wonder if they're just going to do a 'based on' or if they're actually going to try to stick to the comic? if they do try to stick to the comic book, is it going to be a multipart film series (which, really, can be cut into some sort of trilogy, if need be) or just a one shot, compressing all the story into one film?

I hope they don't fuck it up. I adore this story.

I am in agreement, this BETTER not be effed up! This is an incredibly human story and I would have hoped Brian would adapt his own work but we'll see.

I've only heard about it, never read it, but it sounds very interesting.

almost, it's definitely a thinkin’-man’s type of book. The graphic novels are available up through #9 I think and it’s well worth it. Jut keep in mind like the previous poster said it’s a human story about a very average guy thrown into an unbelievable situation. I am slightly concerned as well that Vaughan isn’t penning this. As a movie it will obviously appeal to a different crowd then say Transformers so they HAVE to get it right story wise. We’ll see…..

This is one of my favorite comic books and I'm seriously worried by this team. I've heard Disturbia was good but Taking Lives was a waste of time and film. I wish BKV was still doing the script.

I think this is completely do-able as a movie but it'd be way better as a TV show.

No not as a Movie... a weekly show on FX, SPike, or HBO... the story is way to complex to be told in 2 hours...

Agreed, movielord. Maybe the movie could kick things off, then it could run as an HBO series?

I so love this series! I really hope they pick a great cast though (please do Yorick justice people!)and i do hope they do STICK to the original material. I think a series would be better though (but please no "trying hard" series like let's say "Neverwhere". Geez that was horrible!Such a waste! Most horrible adaptation EVER!). This is such a precious little project, I hope those movie guys have enough brain and passion to translate it into film. If not, then i hope they should've gone down with that plague!
