Irish actors, Colm Meaney and Jason O'Mara, have been selected for the American spinoff to the sci-fi show, LIFE ON MARS, says BBC. The program which was a major hit on the BBC (Seven million viewers in the UK watched the finale earlier this year) will be coming to ABC very shortly after winning an International Emmy award for best drama. Trekkies will know actor Colm Meaney from his long stint (87-99) as Chief Miles O'Brien in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Meaney will be playing character Gene Hunt in the spinoff while O'Mara will be portraying character Sam Tyler in it.

Plot Concept: The US remake will see Tyler transported back to the 1970s from the future after his girlfriend is abducted.

Big thanks to scooper, "snallygaster" for passing this along..

BBC didn't say anything about it but that doesn't say much, they may not have wanted to point out their BBC America channel doesn't do that well.

This spinoff is going to the primetime network though...

Of course that in itself doesn't say it will succeed like the BBC UK version did. Our primetime networks are a little irritating when it comes to sci-fi shows..I still can't find myself forgiving ABC for what they did to Invasion.

Uhhhh...what??

Do you not know that BBC America broadcasts their shows for the American audience? They are the same series that are in UK. How do you get that it failed? And wouldn't it be a guy from present sent to the 70's? Unless of course you are writing us from the past, lol.

Anyone know when season2 is starting on BBCA? I heard it may not be until next spring.

I hope the ABC version is good, I really like the BBC series.

Not sure if you were pointing that to me or Zack, Bjjdenver.

Yes, I'm aware that they show BBC shows on BBC America here..I have the network and have watched their Office and their Robin Hood shows.

I was just saying that perhaps BBC didn't want to point out that the UK version didn't get the highest of ratings on BBC America when talking about this spinoff on ABC.

Hope that clears it up though I wasn't certain if you were pointing it at me or not. lol

I was a big fan of the British version of the show so I'm looking forward to this series too. Meaney strikes me as the perfect actor to play Gene Hunt, but I don't think I'm familiar with Jason O'Mara.

Didn't the British version only last two seasons though?

I would rather they just put the real Life on Mars on over here. Of course, I said the same thing about The Office. So I've been wrong before.

Hah, that's what I figured bjj. I guess it doesn't matter, I bet Zack's answer is the same as mine since he's a big movie nerd (or geek) like the rest of us. His Mania Video section is ..."impressive...most impressive." :)

I was thinking about why they failed to say about the lower ratings on BBCA. I think it's logistics.

Perhaps some body can help me out on this one because I haven't had standard cable in 12 years...Hell, I got rid of digital cable 7 or 8 years ago because we demand Satelite for the NFL Ticket..

Does BBCA come on standard cable these days? Or is it just on Digital and Satelite? If so, that limits the American households which can watch the BBC UK shows..So they may consider it a non-entity that their shows don't do well here. That's a theory anyway.

Perhaps they'll have better luck with a spinoff on ABC. I still have my doubts because I don't trust em...Damn youuu, Invasion.

The BBC version did only last two seasons, but that was because they didn't want to do any more. They were asked to make a third season, but didn't think they could stretch the concept (a highly laudable decision).

There will be a spin-off instead, called Ashes to Ashes.

Here's my problem... and I like Colm Meany... They are remaking a British TV series for American television using an all Irish cast? Why bother. Just check out the original.
