FAMILY GUY Will Continue Without Peter, Stewie, or Brian?

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Sunday, November 18, 2007

I know the writer’s strike is driving everyone crazy. The brunt of it is just now really hitting and it’s only going to get worse. Seth McFarlane has stopped working on his series Family Guy in support of the strike. Seth is not only the show-runner but he’s also the head writer, and the voice of the three main male characters Peter, Brian, and Stewie. I only mention this because the network is continuing work on the series without McFarlane. McFarlane apparently gave his blessing for the series to continue without him but he hopes that it won’t saying in an article over at EW.com "it would just be a colossal dick move if they did." McFarlane has been fired by FOX before so seeing them attempt to continue the series without him isn’t surprising.

Tonight’s episode is the first that was worked on without McFarlane at the helm to broadcast. Fans may not see much of a difference this week because this episode was basically done prior to McFarlane’s exit but all of the last minute updates and changes to the episode were not, so the network had to handle that stuff. So, if there weren’t any major issues with the episode everything should be fine tonight, but the question is: what will upcoming episodes be like? Will Fox actually try to do new episodes completely without the voice of Peter and the writing that we all know and love? Let’s all hope for a quick ending to the writer’s strike so we won’t have to find out.

Various shows are halting production as we speak due to the writer’s strike with most recent of which being Bionic Woman and the upcoming Battlestar Galactica. That along with the holiday has really smashed the schedule for this week. We are getting the BSG side story film this week called Battlestar Galactica: Razor and that is my most anticipated bit of television this week. We are also getting new Heroes this week and I’m hoping to see the series kick into high gear just a bit. This would be a really good week to start trying to win back all of those viewers the series has lost this season.

Tension soon develops among Melanie, schoolteacher Annie Hayworth, Mitch's former flame (Pleshette), and Mitch's domineering mother (Tandy). The emotional interplay is interrupted (and reflected) by the sudden and unexplained attack of thousands of birds on the area.Hailed as one of Hitchcock's masterpieces by some and despised by others, the Birds is certainly among Hitchcock’s more complex and fascinating works.

THE INCREDIBLES (NBC, 8:00 PM EST)

Brad Bird's richly imagined, retro-moderne homage to the superhero-fueled daydreams of his youth creates a vibrantly original mythology, heavily inflected by the lore of Marvel's much-loved Fantastic Four and spiked with allusions to James Bond, Thunderbirds and other '60s pop-culture touchstones.

                                                                            Sunday

SIMPSONS (FOX, 8PM EST) Funeral For A Friend

Sideshow Bob (Kelsey Grammer) tries again for revenge against the Simpsons. In a nod to “Frasier,” David Hyde Pierce and John Mahoney have cameos as Sideshow Bob's brother and father, respectively. Also: Keith Olbermann has a voice cameo as himself.

I can totally appericate what Seth is doing, but at the same time, walking away from your own show, that was taken away once already, is a ballsy move. If Fox does try to do shows without Seth, it would be very very stupid, and I think it would hurt the show in the long run. Just please, please don't take Family Guy away from us again.

how can they keep working on the show without writers? whose writing the scripts, the execs??
The actors and directors need to walkout of whatever is they are doing to put more pressure on the studios. Their own contracts are coming to an end next year and I bet they would want the writers showing support for them.
End this strike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not completely behind Seth on this at all, this strike has to end some time, and for fox wanting to continue the show without him, that'll be good for a laugh and not in the good way

I think you guys are over reacting.

He has probably already done all the voices for several episodes ahead. This is a cartoon, the writing is done many months before, than the voices are done months and months before, and then they have to draw the show. So they probably already have several episodes done, and are just finishing up drawing them.

If Deal or No Deal pulls in better numbers than Bionic Woman, BW is in serious trouble. The wrtiers who work on this show may not have one to come back to when the strike ends. After the strike ends, expect a lot of cancellations. I think there are some shows they needed to air because there was nothing to replace them with.

Animated series have a bit of an advantage in the writers strike due to the longer lead time needed in production. According to EW, Family Guy has seven more first-run episodes before the scripts run out. On the other hand, EW reports that The Office has already run through the last of its scripts. Here's a link for those interested in just how many episodes of each show are left:

Yes they ahve scripts but these types of shows are constantly tweaked along the way. So, who's gonna do those adjustments? Also, they have scripts but not all if any of the dialog has been recorded. I'd rather see the series go into reruns than have a bunch of network hacks screw it up.

I mean really how entertaining and funny can Family Guy be without Brian, Peter, or especially Stewie? And while changing the voice actors for Meg in season 1 to 2 were fine. Changing Stewie, Brians, and Peter`s voice would just suck. I don`t think I`d watch it.

They could pull a South Park and just splice sound bites of previous Stewie, Brian and Peter episodes. It worked -marvellously- when Chef left SP. ;)

I watched it last noght and it was as funny as the episode from last week. They must not be affected yet because they are animated they are finished months in advance as bdd said.
The voices were the regular voices.
