and herein lies a good portion of what made Trek important, seeing as how Roddenberry made the effort and (Cough) others (Abrams!) haven't

and Truman Show's importance is more than just than foretelling reality tv...

"Network" was not a futuristic movie, but man, it certainly predicted the future. Fox News and MSNBC are built on a template that originated with that film.

I always loved the 'future' portrayed in Minority Report.  There were great advances in technology but it was primarily businesses and governments that used them.  There was massive use in cities and the tech was known to everyone but not everyone had it.  People still lived in neighborhood and read books all while being surrounded by technology.  And of course the great debate, was technology making things better or worse.  Tom Cruise may be two heaping scoops of crazy but damn I love that movie.

The amount of Star Trek inspired technology is almost unbelievable.  The fact that so many scientist and inventors look to Star Trek as a source of inspiration is really cool.

Starlight - Can you really blame Abrams, or anyone in Trek since Gene, for not making an effort?  It's all based on his ideas and concepts.  They're not trying to re-invent his wheel.

 Starlight,

Do you mean to say that Abrams' Star Trek doesn't make an effort to predict anything about our future or that it fails to inspire?  I just can't believe that's so.

It might have been in Minority Report but flexible video screens are also already here.  At CES Microsoft showed off a completely flexible touch screen.  It was amazing.  If you want to see a hilarious video of what Microsoft's vision of the future, check this out ...

Starlight, it's only been less than a year since the VERY AWESOME Star Trek movie came out... give it some time... like more than 9 months...

AND as Darthduck said, he wasn't reinventing, he was re-packaging and re-presenting old concepts. I for one LOVE the look of the bridge and think the technology will be expanded on in the next movies.

Also quit blaming Abrahms, he did an amazing job, and PARAMOUNT is responsible for wanting a re-boot...well Paramount and fans like me.
