The Next from M. Night

By Robert T. Trate     December 10, 2012
Source: MovieClips/ Trailers

Here is the first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth. The story is about a crash landing, where a father and son explore a planet that was evacuated by humans 1,000 years earlier.  After Earth features Will Smith, Jaden Smith, and Isabelle Fuhrman. So what do you think Maniacs, can M. Night redeem himself with After Earth?

After Earth arrives in theaters on June 7th, 2013.

Until i saw this trailer i had little hope for this film.  It looks really solid.

People need to get off the anti- M. Night Shyamalan band wagon. The Sixth Sense? Unbreakable? Signs? The Village? Not exactly the worst filmography.  People seem to take him to task for not making every single movie exactly the same.  Reviews for his movies invariably begin with "This guy brought us The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, now lets compare his new movie to those!"  It's completely unfair.

Totally agree wallyrus, excpet he did ruin Last Airbender. As for After Earth, maybe they shouldve named it attack of the baboons?

Very cool trailer. Jaden smith is on the fast track to being a future superstar. I guess u could say he is gonna be the next Will Smith.

Gotta say, I know he's just a kid, but I'm getting a tad tired of Jaden for the movie itself, looks like it has possibilities, but I'm still not that run down of movies, wallyrus, IMO, they steadily went downhill.  And I notice you didn't even mention "Lady In The Water"...but this does look better than that...I may have to see it.

Oh wait this is an M night shamanlamadingdong movie? Great I can see the twist now; this isn't earth at all.... It's, it's  actually the MOON!!! Duhn Duhn Duhn !!!!

"Sixth Sense" was phenominal, "Unbreakable" was good, "Signs" and "Villiage" were ok, "Lady in the Water", "The Happening" and "Airbender" were beyond terrible. I agree with Sarcastic, M. Night's films have steadily went downhill. This movie looks good but with M. Night's name attached, I will not see it unless it receives rave reviews. He has not made a watchable movie since 2004. That's a long time.

Anyone else notice that the trailer does not show the directors name?

DarkXid 12/10/2012 11:45:26 PM

Doesn't need a director's name.  This is a Will Smith movie.

If it is hailed as a success M. Night is back.  He'll ride this success to death and his great insight in wanting to work with the Smith's.

if it flops, he was in New Dehli getting a Pastrami on rye talking about what crapfests WW West, Hancock and that one with that one dude were -so he couldn't possibly have directed the newest Will Smith flop.  Will took over, it was a movie for Jaden...Remember me, I'm the 'Sixth Sense' guy.  He was really a ghost!!!  I'm a genius!!  Remember me!!

Just gotta point something out...there was a movie starring Jason Statham, Ron Perlman, Burt Reynolds, Ray Liotta...very good cast...remember what the movie was?...anybody? was "In The Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale", directed by Uwe Boll...directors are EVERYTHING, DarkXid.  LOL

Anyway, kennynine - I honestly loved "Signs" the first time I saw it, but it's fallen so far off my list...seriously, even a pussy like E.T. knew how to get around wooden doors.

Will Smith movie or not, usually well established directors will display their name at some point in the preview. If I recall correctly, M.Night was obsessive about displaying his name to the point that almost all of his movies had his name practically in the title. "M Night Shyamalan's The Villiage", "M. Night Shyamalan's Lady in the Water."

Columbia pictures marketing are smart, they know that M. Night's name will turn some viewers away. If they were confident in their director we would have seen "Columbia Pictures presents, A film by M. Night Shyamalan." But we just got "From Columbia Pictures."

If this movie has a saving grace, it is that M. Night did not write it. So there is a glimmer of hope, and I do hope it is good because M. Night does have talent. He just has not been showing it in recent years.
