Mania Box Office Report: Still So Hungry

Stooges and Cabin fall

By Robert T. Trate     April 15, 2012
Source: Box Office Mojo

It’s almost hard to believe that The Hunger Games has held on for a fourth week in a row. It seems neither the Farrelly Brother’s Three Stooges nor Joss Whedon’s The Cabin in the Woods could take down Katniss Everdeen. Since both films got decent reviews (check out our own Rob Vaux’s review) perhaps they will rise up in their second week? John Cusak’s The Raven arrives this week, but our prediction is that Whedon’s Avengers presence and good word of mouth will ensure a Cabin victory.

Wow so Titanic has added almost 200mil to its worldwide box office.

I think Mr Trate last week asked Why did they do that again? , well Sir I think you have your answer

Saw Cabin, really really enjoyed it. I usually don't take to comedy/horror but this went over well.

Next week I'm only looking forward to CHIMPANZEE and To The Artic in I-Max 3D. I love these animal/nature docs. especially in 3D. They're often better and more engaging than normal fare

it's amazing... the whole Titanic thing... Iam checking it out this week at the Cinermadome!

I like the new layout for the Box office report. But can we get worldwide numbers? I know I ask too much. :)

I'm curious as to which movie you guys think will be the worldwide winner this summer?? I'm thinking its going to be Spider-man as long as the reviews arent bad. I would say TDKR but I dont think it has the broad appeal that Spider-man has. I'm unsure about Avengers numbers. It will do well for sure but I still don't believe it will do EPIC numbers. With the exception of Iron Man, the other characters films were lucky to break 200 mill domestically. While I'm sure it will break 200 mill, I'm unsure it will break 300 mill domestically. I don't how that will translate worldwide.

Also, too bad about Lockout's numbers. I was hoping it would at least break the top 5. I guess the days of one-liner packed action movies will not be coming back anytime soon. :(

Clownican, what site do you recommend?

vitieddie 4/15/2012 7:47:16 PM

I think avengers will break 500 easily in the US - not sure about worldwide - but if i had to choose, i'd say avengers to be the winner world BO

I got to watch Battleship last weekend ... it was decent - kinda reminded me of independence day and transformers ... lots of plot holes but easy to ignore and to just enjoy the action ... 3/5

I hadn't read much about Cabin in the Woods so I didn't know what to expect. During the first few minutes of the movie I was asking myself if I was in the right theater. When the movie really got rolling it surprised me in a very good way. I definitely recommend it.

The Three Stooges was exactly what I expected. The kids loved it. I thought it was just ok; some good laughs but as a fan of the old Three Stooges a lot of the gags were old hat to me. I would have liked to see Kate Upton out of her robes more! lol

Lockout was just ok; nothing special. Pretty good effects; definitely got me in the mood for the upcoming summer blockbusters. Maggie Grace, while cute, just doesn't jump off the screen at me. Never has. Guy Pearce was ok, but I didn't think the role really fit on him.

Looking forward to The Raven.

Avengers won't break Hunger Games' record, but it will be a major hit for Marvel. I think it'll make about $120 million (domestic) in the first weekend and reach around $290 total. If positive word of mouth hits the internet from the foreign markets the numbers could go up.

Yahoo news is running an article that Titanic has now officially made it past 2 billion in worldwide gross. Cameron is a beast!!!!!!!!!!

Saw Cabin in the Woods, it didn't dissapoint although it wasn't as good as I was expecting it was still enjoyable. Buying the visual companion on amazon to find out exactly what all the nightmare creatures are that I missed.

I'm am excited and looking forward to Avengers just like the rest of you but I look for it to do well but not mind blowing numbers. Like clownican said except Iron Man none of the others really became box office juggernauts. I actually have a prediction that Avengers won't break the three day weekend record set by Hunger Games. I will be the first to admit I'm wrong if it opens to record breaking numbers but I don't think the demographcs work in favor of Avengers doing that type fo business. At least not in the immediate release by the end of the summer who knows. I use Hunger Games because that's the biggest film of this year so far and now has the fourth highest three day opening. While I'm also equally excited about Spider-Man I don't think it will be the biggest summer film. The average movie goers last experience was Raimi's Spider-Man 3. People will have to get used to the new series in the same way Batman Begins reinvigorate that franchise.

I think your absolutely right Wessmith. I might actually go up to 300 or 350 mil domestically but I think that will be it.

Yahoo is also saying Hunger Games is the first film since Avatar to be number one for four consecutive weeks.

Just got back from seeing Cabin in the Woods...LOVED IT!  Fans of horror/monster movies shouldn't miss this one, especially if you happen to be a Joss Whedon fan as well.  Lots of familiar faces from the Whedon universe and probably the most original horror film to be released in years.  Highly recommended!
