Hollywood is too sequel obssesed...

Is it me or has hollywood gone sequel crazy over the past 5-10 years.

Has it gotten to the point that Hollywood is so desperate to make a profit that they will milk a franchise to the very last drop just to please stock holders. Already coming are the next  two Iron man sequels that we know of. Cars 2 was just recently announced, it looks like spiderman 4 is now in the works with Dunst saying yes to Marry Jane, and that is just the tip of the iceburg.

National treasure 3, Pirates of the Carribean 4, I am legend prequel, are just a few others that are in the works and will more than likelyh be marketed to the (Summer Blockbuster movie Selection).

Not only are a ton of sequels being made but thanks to the success of Rob Zombie's Halloween remake it appears that reinventing old franchises are now in vogue. Star Trek is at the top of this list. Followed by Friday the 13th. It wouldn't surprise me if a prequel to the Nightmare on Elm Street series would come up in the next couple of years as well.

There is an old saying when it comes to good story ideas: Everythings already been done, the trick to writing a good story is to tell it in a new type of way. But with so many reinvented movies coming down the pike that saying is being taken to literally.

The reason, to me, as to why Hollywood is so sequel obssesed is quite obvious to any casual observer. It's all about money. Hollywood has become to scared to promte something brand new and label it a hit. They need a sure thing that will make money and keep their stock holders happy. When something shows up on the big screen and becomes a (Surprise hit) It is litteraly snaged by studio execs and sequels are then approved in the hopes that lightning will strike twice.

Hollywood needs to take a few more risks and let new filmakers into the door and give them thier shot a fortune and fame. Hollywood has in the passt but not nearly as much as it should. Hopefully in the future Hollywood will go back to the indie film arena again in the hopes of injecting some new blood into movie theaters.
