Mania Box Office Report: Ranger Down

Minions Rule

By Robert T. Trate     July 08, 2013
Source: boxofficemojo.com

While walking through the canyons of the mall on Saturday, I noticed something very foretelling of the box office results this weekend. Hot Topic had all their Lone Ranger items marked down to 50% off. WOW. It only been a few days since the film’s release and already they were looking to unload their edgy Disney attire.

As you already know by my headline, The Lone Ranger fell to the Minions this weekend. “Through its first five days, Despicable Me 2 earned an estimated $142.1 million. That's just ahead of Toy Story 3($141 million) for top five-day start ever for an animated movie”. - Ray Subers Box Office Mojo.

Ray Subers also reported that Despicable Me 2 is also on track to set the same numbers as Monsters University. What isn’t surprising is that Despicable Me 2 has already broke the original’s numbers in two. I find it funny that a studio famous for animated features, Disney, lost to an animated feature this weekend.

This week it all about the Kaiju and Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. Good or bad I wonder how this will effect Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla remake.

Well it was a great movie, not surprised its made those numbers. My 2nd favorite movie this year. After Man of Steel of course.

Despicable Me 2 was enjoyable.  Saw it with some friends and their kids on the 4th.  Don't really have any interest in The Lone Ranger, though my mom said she really enjoyed it and thought it was fun.

I am curious to see how American audiences react to Pacific Rim.  I'm looking forward to it as I know many of my fellow maniacs are, but if the general American movie going public?

Pacific Rim is really good. I caught an advance screening Saturday & enjoyed it from start to finish. I think it will be the summer's surprise hit.

Despicable Me 2 has an outside shot of catching IM3 for #1 summer movie at the box office.  Worst case it will wind up #2.  I didn't like it quite as much as the first one but it was pretty close.  My kids loved it and want to see it again.

I'm excited for Pacific Rim and hope it does well.  PR, Gravity and Elysium need to do well so we get more original sci-fi movies and not just sequels/reboots/remakes.

Saw both "The Lone Ranger" and DM2 this weekend.  Lone Ranger was bad, just a bad movie.  Disnety really screwed the pooch with this one, where to start..............1) The Johnny Depp act is played out, he's almost turning into Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell, playing essentially the same role over and over again, just tweaking it a little and changing the make-up.  He needs to break away from Disney, Verbanski, and Burton for a few years and to a differtent type movie, he's a great actor but these last few roles are not letting that show.  2) The movie never made up it's mind if it was going to be serious or funny, it just didn't work.  3) Who's brilliant idea was it to have Tonto as top billing ????  This charater (Lone Ranger) is timeless and needed to be re-introduced to a younger audiance, and they missed a great opportunity to make a serious action flick with a better actor in the lead role.  I hope Disney cancels Pirates 5 because of this failure.

BRING ON PACIFIC RIM !!!

Remember they almost didn't make the Lone Ranger because Verbanski wanted a BIGGER budget.  Doesn't look like the foreign box offices are going to save this pic's losses like they did for John Carter.  Of course the reason Vebanski wanted a bigger budget is because he had that "unique once in a lifetime script" that obviously was all bull...

All about PR this weekend and might, just might go see Grown Ups 2 (my teenage son wants to see it).

I saw now you see me last thursday and surprisingly the theater was 2/3 full. I also kinda like the movie.
