This week we were given the first poster for Neill Blomkamp’s (District 9) film Elysium. Less than a day later Sony Pictures has posted the first trailer for the film. Check it out below.

The Plot: In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Elysium features Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Sharlto Copley, and Alice Braga.

Elysium arrives August 9th, 2013.

Very cool visuals and great trailer.  A new vision for an older idea can be a good thing.  Looks to be an amazing year for sci-fi fans.

Special effects look flawless. Great trailer.

Daaaamn!  Now that is what I am talking about.

From the visual and action standpoints I'm in. Another movie depicting how those that are successful and wealthy are evil individuals that should be taken down by the poor...I think I'll just turn on CNN for that.

@ice...I hear ya; funny how it's so hard for people to find jobs then my kids go out a find jobs on the first day they start looking.  I'm tired of these evil rich people vs. poor huddled masses stories.  However, I'll be there because it looks pretty sweet visually.

iceknight hit it on the nose for me.  I can think of at least half a dozen films about class warfare and the rich are evil jerks, leaving the lower class to rebel against them in order to set the system "right."  I applaud Neill Blomkamp for making two original sci-fi action films with real stories and themes to them, but what's with Hollywood's obsession over showing why socialism is the answer over capitalism?

Sanity 4/10/2013 7:08:40 AM

It's a disturbing movement that isn't just obsessed over by Hollywood.  I'm seeing it everywhere these days.  It's scary.  However I'll probably pay to go see this movie.  It looks pretty awesome.

"You won't let me make a Halo movie? Screw you! I'll make my own version!"

I'll pass on this because I just can't stand Matt Damon. He's another screaming limousine liberal hypocrite. Who disses gun owners but at the same he's surrounded by armed security who'd blow your head off if you looked at them funny.

Wiseguy 4/10/2013 7:58:56 AM

I agree with all the comments but I too will be seeing this in the theaters.

It's always the evil rich folk or corporations in films. I can almost always overlook the political idealogy and just enjoy the film
