Mania Box Office Report: OZ Still Powerful

Battle of the Magicians!

By Robert T. Trate     March 18, 2013
Source: Box Office Mojo

It was a battle of magicians this weekend as Oz the Great and Powerful met the newcomer The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. Oz pummeled Burt as did the Halle Berry thriller The Call. Overall Oz is the true winner as it is now is on track for Alice in Wonderland ($230 Million) numbers. Will it meet Disney expectations globally? I was surprised that The Call pushed The Incredible Burt Wonderstone to number #2. One would expect Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell to easily push Berry aside and rake in bigger numbers. Yet The Call took in 7 million dollars more and made its budget, plus 4 million more. Should we expect The Call 2 next spring? Can you read the sarcasm in that sentence? If anything, it probably earned a direct to video sequel.

This week will we go back in time with Nicholas Cage and Ryan Reynolds in The Croods? Perhaps a die hard adventure in Olympus Has Fallen is in the cards?

Saw Oz this weekend and i left feeling nothing. I am not saying the movies bad by any means its just the action was ok and the story was ok but there wasnt even any sly humor. It was just blah i just expected more i guess.

Felt the same way. It didn't deliver when it needed too.

I went to Oz with the only purpose of watching Mila Kunis. . . .other then that I don't think I'll be remembering Oz for years to come.

I don't know they explained well enough how Oz defeated the witches and came into power.   I only had a problem with the dark side lightning strikes at the end.  Oh and no Ruby slippers?  What's that about?

Did anyone see the Tinman???

I mean he scares away a Lion and calls it cowardly, and he makes a bunch of scarecrows, I was hoping to see something of it. Perhaps the conman had a bit of real magic in him to create most of the main characters.

Also Dorthys last name, and Annies fiance share the same name, considering a prequal has it's hands tied, I found most of it to be fairly enjoyable.

Rob, just a request, can you add a column that states the # of weeks a movie has been out?

Dazzler, no ruby slippers has to do with the fact that they are trademarked by Warner Bros (I think MGM or some old movie studio originally owned the rights, but WB bought them).  In the original Frank L. Baum story, the slippers were silver.  This was all Disney's not so sly attempt to entice people to see their movie that were fans of the old one.

It was OK to me and much better than Tim Burton's hot mess of Alice in Wonderland. That said, I kind of feel like they were trying to make Oz into Star Wars. The Wicked Witch of the East (WWE) would have been the Emperor who shoots green lightning instead of purple.

I'll tell you what... has anyone seen Jack the Giant Slayer? We had so much fun as a family watching that movie - what a blast! Great visual effects and the fun, action and clever wit was virtually non-stop till the end. It's too bad to see it has done so poorly at the BO - a LOT of fun!

Saw a sneak preview of The Croods last night and it was fun too... definitely a kids movie but we all enjoyed the craziness of it and the characters were all very funny.
