No Bird for Episode VII

With all the speculation going around about who will/ should direct Star Wars Episode VII one more name is now out of the hat. JJ Abrams, Steven Spielberg, and Ben Affleck have said no. Quentin Tarantino was probably the most vocal against it. Now fanboy favorite Brad Bird (Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol) is out too.

Here is his response via Twitter: ““(at a twitter follower) tell me your next one is the new Star Wars!” Nope. A science fiction film. Not Star Wars.” he then replied, “That said, Michael Arndt is a fantastic writer and Kathy Kennedy is a brilliant producer. I will be first in line to see the new STAR WARS”.

Currently Brad Bird is working on 1952, a science fiction film, with Damon Lindelof and it's said to be a "Close Encounters-esque tentpole."
Who does this leave now? Jon Favreau, Joe Johnston, and Matthew Vaughn are still out there.

Thanks to
Chopsaki for the submission.

I can't see Jon doing it, Joe and Matthew top my list. Whoever filmed the ewok movies or the Holiday Special... keep them far away....

I think Disney should give Favreau a shot. Although I have faith they'll make a good selection I think Disney should throw Favs a bone for getting the Marvel movieverse off on the right track even though it wasn't part of Disney at the time. Not to mention that I think he can hit the perfect tone for these films

I'm still in favorite for Duncan Jones, Kenneth Branaugh or the guy who did District 9.

Um, so it has to be the "hot director of the moment"?

Huh, well there goes my number one pick.  Like Wise said above I am also for Favreau being given a shot.  I do know that who ever does take the job had better do a job that blows the public's collective minds.  Sure, no pressure there at all.

Dammit, I'll do it then.

Hand me the script. I got a camera on my phone. I know a few people who say they are pretty good actors. One of those guys knows some community theatre costume makers. Front me some money for top flight FX software for my computer and a really big greenscreen. I'm all set.

Well, maybe a really, really good caterer. Ya gotta eat!

And I'll need the hottest, uh, smartest...no hottest girl assistant money can buy.

Maybe one of those super fancy trailers to hang out in between shoots.

A limo would be nice.

Can I get a massuesse, too?

About 20 years ago, I'd been excited to hear about the return of Han.  Now, it just makes me kind of sad.

How about Roland Emmerich / Dean Devlin?  They're no stangers to directing sci-fi.  Just don't do another Godzilla, and all should go well.

Good. Bird can start work on Incredibles 2!
