Special Edition's Please!
(Tue 01/15/2008 06:00pm)

There are still quite a few movies that have not been given the right treatment in terms of 'Special Editions'.

Some frankly probably will never get the extras but we can only hope.

I personally would like to see:

Johnny Mnemonic - Yes, that is right. I really like this movie and feel it deserves some extras on it. I would like to see a making of and deleted scenes. For me, it was one of those movies I just latched onto when I was a kid and never quite got over.

Escape From L.A. - Another some feel is was quite a dissapointment. When I watch it, I watch it for Snake, the main character and not thinking of Escape From N.Y. and I believe that was the problem a lot of people had with it. They had seen a classic and finally hear about a sequal coming out and what they got was something completely different. Still, it has it's faults but I would love to hear a commentary with others.

Now that I think of it, there are also two Carpenter classics that have NOTHING on the DVD.

They Live - Awesome movie! "I came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum.....And I am all out of bubble gum!" The fight scene between Piper and David is also one of the coolest.

Prince of Darkness - How can this movie STILL have nothing on the DVD's!?! Easily one of the creppiest Carpenter films of all. And you know, he is getting older everyday...I think he needs to get on top of these films quickstyle!!

So, what other classic's would you fellow Maniac's love to see with some more material?

Ah, the dreamer looking for his special editions...

Dude, I am there with you on 'They Live' (I think it could actually be remade or continued) but sadly we'll probably never get a Special Edition. Now I am going to Monster Mania 10 in March, in New Jersey and there is a scheduled appearance for KEITH DAVID & RODDY PIPER. Now sometimes in the past when this happens they announce things (they did a Monster Squad reunion and sure enough there was a DVD) and we get lucky. So you never know. The conventions are pretty good. This will be my third and they don't try an squeeze every cent out of you like creation does.

For me personally a Special Edition of 'Darkman'!!!!

Here is the Monster Mania web site:

Oooo, pretty good list. Darkman, too!

I don't really know if these films have SE's or no, but I'd like them to -

Willow
Romancing the Stone
The Crow
Diggstown
Maverick

Call me crazy.

Well, it's already been released as a Special Edition but I can tell you one movie which I really wish would get a new theatrical re-release.

We're going through the Alien Quad set this week..

Watched Alien Sunday night..

Watched Aliens tonight..

I really wish they would release Aliens in theaters under today's standards of sound technology. I had a chance to catch the re-release of Alien a few years back and it kept going through my head last night that I would love for them to re-release the Cameron sequel in theaters as well.

Hicks, Hudson and Ripley on the big screen again---oh my!

Nice list swansong.
Escape’s a great film and I’ve never understood how so many people can hate on it. It was over the top, sure, but on purpose.
Same for They Live. The latter’s a relatively recent film that, much as I usually don’t care for remakes, could really use an update. It would work fantastically in this post 9/11 world we find ourselves in. I think I read somewhere at some point Carpenter was thinking of adapting it into a TV series. Not sure it would work as an ongoing story like that but I’d love to revisit the themes it presented.
Haven’t seen Johnny Mnemonic since the theater but remember liking it a lot and, again, being confused by all the haters. Sadly anything w/Keanu comes with pre-packaged hating these days.
Never seen Prince Of Darkness, which is weird cuz I’m a Carpenter nut. Sam Neil right? I’m assuming you meant creepiest and not crappiest : ) I guess if it’s never been released on DVD then it isn’t that weird I ain’t seen it.
And yeah Jarrod - Aliens on the big screen again would completely rock my ass.

In my home town of Phoenixville, PA we are planning to show Alien in 35mm in March. It's going to be crazy! We also have all three Indy's in the works in chronilogical order post IJKOTCK.

No times yet but the site is:

Prince of Darkness isn't awesome but it has an interesting idea... worth the watch if not to see a decent Carpenter film (not great) but 10 times better than anything after In the Mouth of Madness.

I think a re-release of ALiens in theatre is a great idea and thought it would be coming a lot sooner since Alien came out in theatre a couple years ago...I am HOPING it will....

The Crow has a S.E. But what I wanted to see was all the scenes cut out of The Bone Crusher or whatever his name was. Instead they just show you little sketches of him and the Crow character.

I want a re-release of the special Edition of Big Trouble in Little China and strangely enough Bride of Re-Animator's SE disks have forever vanished into the void (before I even hear of it being released)... I NEVER once thought they'd pull the release off shelves and keep the bare bones disk floating around for ever.
but for all the bitching, whining, moaning, waiting... and waiting...
those Corporate dicks at Morgan Creek STILL havent released the archival footage for Clive Barkers NIGHTBREED. They are keeping it locked away in a vault in the Morgan Creek MovieBomb Shelter and wont give it, sell it, or trade it to Clive Barker to cut a SE:NIGHTBREED disk collection.

fortunatly we'll always have Buckaroo Banzai across the 8th Demention on DVD... its far from a SE but its packed with bonus material, bloopers, deleated scenes, a recut opening and more... I'm happy.
As for Escape from LA, Gentlemen Death,
"They had seen a classic and finally hear about a sequal coming out and what they got was something completely different."
What we got was a CARBON COPY/REMAKE of the original that masquarades itself as a "sequel" (I use that word extremely lightly), Escape from LA is laughable NOT because its epically bad, but because it recaps all the best highlights and memorable shots from Escape from New York again...and again...and again.
Dont tell me that Carpenter and Deborah Hill had some super fantastic new idea for a sequel that they just HAD to have greenlit... they all but copied the first flick in every detail point for point.

mckracken • Jan 16, 2008, 07:12pm •
oh... yes and my all time favorite:
Kill Bill: the whole Bloody Affair on DVD.
I will NOT be buying either volume of Kill Bill since they are TOTALLY bare bones disks. Each.
I feel the same way about the TWO releases of Grindhouse flicks....

Hey mckracken that Special Edition of Big Trouble in Little China is F-ing sweet... especially the 6 demon bag feature... and one of the best commentaries ever... the second I pulled it out of the shipping box at the video store it had to be mine!

A "Howard the Duck" special edition.

or "Star Trek V". I'm an EX-trekker, but yeah, STV was bad, but special in a way. Shatner wanted to put out a special ed DVD, but it didn't happen.

I think it makes most sense, as Tim Burton pointed out, to give the special treatment to a BAD movie. maybe it could be fixed that way.
