We are now 3 episodes into Series 3 (if you count the Christmas episode) and all is fine. Freema Agyeman has stepped into an established show and like David Tennant in series 2, she acts like she has been around all along, a testimate to the strong writing and casting choices of the show.
Now I am going to be the first one to say that Doctor Who is not for everyone, especially here in North America, where we like out Sci fi gritty and dark. DrWho has alot more humor and can for the most part be a little more cheesy than say a show like BSG or the X-Files. Not to say the stories aren't interesting but if you have tried to watch it before and didn't care for the acting, stories, or dialog, there will be nothing new about series 3 to change your mind.
In the latest episode we find the Doctor once again travelling through time with his new companinon Martha. This is a one time trip to thank her for her help in the last episode. Martha is skptical at first about Time travel but overcomes that doubt within about 10 seconds of stepping out the door into London circa 1599.
To make a long story short the plot involve Witches and the power of words. Wtiches, who are actually aliens like all mythic creatures in the DrWho universe, are ploting to use a shakespeare play to open a portal and release their imprisoned race. They use several methods to achieve this goal, but a form voodoo doll seem to be the most effective. All the 'Magic" is explained as being a different form of science that uses words alone not mathematics like humans do. It is descibed much better than I could possibly do here. Rest assusured all ends up well in the end with some clever dialog used along the way.
The Doctor is such a fun character to watch and Tennant plays him perfectly. Watching him work things out on the fly is entertaining and often hilarious. You want to cheer when things look bad, then he gets that look on his face and well saves the day. Brilliant!
As this episode revolved around witchcraft and magic, and how it is a BBC show references to Harry Potter found thier way into the script and one phrase in perticular made me roll over with laughter. David Tennant had a significant role in the last HP movie so it made it all the more funny.
If you are worried about series 3 being a let down with no Rose Tyler, stop it. The show hasen't missed a beat and is as good as ever.
