Er..FYI, you state that the character renders leave "little to be desired," then that means that they are very good. However, you imply the opposite.

SPEED RACER - May 15, 2008 - 01:01pm
Saw it opening night (see previous post). The kids loved it. I loved it.
The biggest and most vocal critic of the movie that I know (my wife, a longtime Speed Racer fan), absolutely adored it. She was ready to watch it again. I have never, ever heard her say that about a movie before. Certain character notes, or images on the screen just tracked perfectly with her expectations and took her back to when she was a kid (me, too, for that matter).
The actors all nailed their respective parts, and I think the Wachowskis were very successful in realizing a "live action" cartoon. The world, and the laws of physics can be seen as being lifted right out of the cartoon, and as such, car stunts, or fights don't need to be believable "in the real world." With such bright colors and everything being in focus, how could someone not catch onto this?
The story was actually very good as well. Sure, it is a bit simplistic, but it's also sincere, which is refreshing. It's not cynical like Shrek. If anything, it's closer in tone to Enchanted, where it's the joy, optimism and brightness of Giselle against the cynicism and coldness of New York. And there's the family angle of parents needing to let go and let their children follow their own paths and destinies.
Seriously, I don't know what the people who hated it went in expecting. I went in expecting a family-oriented Speed Racer film full of bright colors and kick-ass effects. I got that and more.
In fact, buying the four tix earned me a free movie pass on my Regal Crown club, and I bought the wife the Target Exclusive Speed Racer promo DVD, which has movie money as well, so maybe the two of us will go see it again.
Jakester. Thank you so much. You rule. Im glad someone recognized the fact that i was trying to be really funny. You are the one exception to the rule. The rule being i have to trash anyone who likes LOTR. But you were actually intelligent enough to see the humor in this blog. I was goin for humor just as much as i was trying to say i dont like the films. THANK YOU. If you could do me a favor and bang my blog so more people will see the humor, thatd be great.
