The Manic Maniac: Darwinist Gaming - Jul 18, 2008 - 09:58am
I think it's absolutely possible that we are already living in someone's video game, acting out the roles assigned to us by our creator--who happens to be a genius Sillicon Valley programmer--and that the "natural selection" so aptly illuminated by Charles Darwin was intended all along by a team of super nerds in the distant future on some other planet. Also, Maelo, no reason to be a dick.

The Manic Maniac: The Comic Book is Dead - Jun 27, 2008 - 09:54am
I think some of you guys are missing the point. It's not so much that comic books dont have their use anymore, or that movies and video games have out-competed them. The larger, more cosmic theme running through this article is the idea that ALL MEDIA are being boiled down, pared down, filtered, distilled, disassembled and parceled out into short, efficient chunks. No one reads Dostoyevsky anymore. A smaller and smaller few even read the newspaper. Think about where you get most of your info--internet snippets, headlines on your blackberry, short emails, bits of TV news while you're running on the treadmill. You may have grown up reading the comics, but now you take your kids to see the Hulk or Batman and you're just as happy as them that the entire legacy of that character is focused into 2 hours. We demand a slimmer, sleeker form of entertainment, and the folksy nostalgia of riding your Schwinn to the comic shop to pick up the new issue of Fantastic Four is DONE.

Manic Maniac: Mania news with a cynical twist - Jun 12, 2008 - 10:43am
Great points in here. It's funny how Hollyweird beats a subject to death until we literally cant remember it being anything other than trite and derivative. I mean, just look at this summer's blockbusters and think of the similarities with other recent films/ideas: Iron Man - RoboCop, Rocketeer, Bionic Man Indiana Jones - 3 earlier versions, 2 National Treasures, 2 Tomb Raiders, etc. Narnia - 1 earlier film, LOTR, countless D&D style flicks Hulk - TV show, earlier film 4 years ago! Not to say these or others arent good films. They just add nothing new from the scientific or conceptual standpoint. Give me a tale of biosynthesis or dark matter. Hell, I'll take gray goo residue from a nano experiment gone awry. In any case, I have to wonder whether the time tested cliched plots are just too "pre-sold" for studios to resist, or are we as a mainstream movie-going public just too dense to appreciate new fiction based on the cutting edge of fact?

Chun Li from Street Fighter II was a pretty hot little temptress. I would love to let her kick the everloving shit out of me.

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN - May 16, 2008 - 09:26am
I've heard from a few folks that there is a definitely darker edge to this one and that dyed in the wool fantasy fans will like it more than part 1...

5 Almost-Great Sci-Fi Films Worth a Second Look - May 15, 2008 - 12:44pm
btw, you can watch Night of the Creeps in its entirety on YouTube. It's in 10 parts, each about 9 minutes. Great 80s sci-fi horror.

SPEED RACER - May 09, 2008 - 01:18am
Im with you, mckracken. That cartoon was never interesting. There are so many projects that are just as "pre-sold" as Speed Racer but offering far more potential. I dont understand why they even bothered. I guess they figured the racing community would get behind it. They should have spoken to Sly Stallone about his experience with Driven.

Mania Exclusive Interview: Simon Pegg - Apr 01, 2008 - 03:56pm
Pegg seems down to earth. He's wary of the sensitivity of the Trekkie nation. He's reverent of guys like Tarrantino and Romero. He's a fan of American comedy. Hard not to like the guy...

Mania Exclusive Interview: Superhero Movie Writer-Director Craig Mazin - Mar 27, 2008 - 05:40pm
Like I said, redeem is a perfectly logical way to phrase the way the SM 3&4 followed up after 2. Had they failed to make the same amount, or had they completely bombed, they wouldnt have redeemed anything more than a bus voucher for Mazin. But I'm over it. I cant argue with your taste. You think it sucked. Fine. I'm just defending the writers--both the reporter and the screenwriter. Maybe I'm biased...

Mania Exclusive Interview: Superhero Movie Writer-Director Craig Mazin - Mar 27, 2008 - 04:47pm
I didnt say they were good. I havent even seen them. But Scary Movie 3 and 4 both made more money than part 2. Both got far better ratings, consensus wise, than part 2. Also, $419 million is misleading on the first film because $277 mil of that came from part 1, which was widely considered a "hit." Then, after Scary Movie 2 bombed, most people probably expected that a third either wouldnt get made or would just plain flop. Well, considering that both 3 and 4 did remarkably well, i would call that a redemption, semantically speaking. Btw, Gauley, nice spin job. You cited the AHD's 9th definition of redeem. Well, i would submit definition 4, "to fulfill" which in dictionary terms is the more popular use. In any case, all I'm saying is go easy on the guy. When was the last time you wrote, produced and directed a movie?

Mania Exclusive Interview: Superhero Movie Writer-Director Craig Mazin - Mar 27, 2008 - 02:54pm
Well, technically speaking gauleyboy, Scary Movie 3 and 4 did "redeem" the series. I mean, they grossed a combined $333 million worldwide. That sure as hell counts as redemption where I come from. Show me another series where the Part 3 and Part 4 are that successful.
