Mania Review: The Amazing Spider-Man (Article) - 7/4/2012 12:42:59 AM

If you go to see Amazing Spiderman, don't leave before the credits are over; there is a scene after the credits are rolling. Great movie. I was very pleasantly surprised.

Tarzan Casting Begins (Article) - 5/10/2012 10:53:21 PM

Based on the most recent attempts to bring Tarzan to the screen as a modern character, I don't see it fairing any better than John Carter did. Sad. A new period piece could be done that is respectful of both the African natives as well as the wildlife.

Tarzan Casting Begins (Article) - 5/8/2012 1:17:19 AM

I realize that the original Tarzan doesn't translate well to our politically correct modern world, but still it would be better to stick to the original story. A correct retelling of the stories as written has NEVER OCCURRED on film. For example, they were forever making the Baltimore born, American, blonde Jane Porter into an English girl.
By the time Tarzan met Jane he already wrote in English and soon spoke Belgian/ French. The infamous "Me Tarzan, you Jane" never appeared in the books. He had met d'Arnot and would soon learn of his English heritage. By the time he was again with Jane, he spoke English well and was aware of his history.
Any wild animals were acceptable in the "jungle" movies of the first half of the 20th century and so African and Asian elephants were used interchangeably as were other animals such as American Cougars and Jaguars, and Asian orangutans. In the books Tarzan's animal friends were a monkey, Nikima, and Jadbalja the golden lion. Tantor was any elephant. He had no chimpanzee friends.
Burroughs mistakenly believed gorillas to be violent creatures. So, I would hope that modern knowledge of the animal species would result in some obvious changes. After all, Tarzan could be a great tool for furthering the education of the public about the animals of Africa.
Done as a period piece and yet being more respectful of native African tribes (as he was with his Waziri) this could still be well done. (Think Ron Ely without Jai.)
Most people today seem oblivious to Burroughs' sci-fi stories (evidence the John Carter movie results), some of which included Tarzan in the Pelucidar and Opar stories. There are many Tarzan stories that could be told as written without being updated. Face it; Tarzan's sense of justice would not serve in our modern world.
As for Tarzan; he was described as a giant of a man with well toned muscles. He should be about 6'-4" to 6'-6" in height, and was described as having black hair and steel gray eyes.
I am in favor of the lead actor casting here. I only wish they were not "updating" it as I believe it will have the same result as recent TV series attempts. Today a movie could be made that follows the books, correcting the wildlife errors, and making an exciting action filled film

TV Wasteland: Insert Juvenile Sexual Reference Here (Article) - 9/16/2011 10:15:47 AM

No wonder so many reviewers get ignored here.  Secret Circle will need a few episodes to get viewers introduced to all of the characters. It has a lot of potential. So, give it time to show us what it can do. If it doesn't live up to its potential after a few episodes, then Mr Vaux could rightfully blast it.

I happened to find the first episode intriguing, so I hope it can be more than Mr Vaux seems to expect.
