Incredible Shrinking Man Remake

MGM plans Remake

By Robert T. Trate     February 13, 2013

MGM has acquired the right to to Richard Matheson’s classic story “The Shrinking Man”. Their plan is to update the story and bring it to a whole new generation. Matheson originally had his story adapted into the 1957 movie The Incredible Shrinking Man (original teaser trailer below).

This would be the latest Matheson story to be adapted by Hollywood. I am Legend was made again into a film in 2007 starring Will Smith. The Hugh Jackman robot boxing movie, Steel, was adapted from one of Matheson’s classic Twilight Zone episodes.

Richard Matheson and his son will be adapting the story for the screenplay.

“The book, written when atomic-bomb fear ran high, centers on a man who is exposed to radiation and insecticide and begins to shrink. The Mathesons will modernize the story to reflect advancements such as nanotechnology”. Read the full story here on THR

Personally, I have been a huge fan of Matheson’s written work. His movie adaptations are fine, but never compete with his books. In the right hands, as it is with anything, this could be a welcomed update.

Strange, I was just saying to my son at Christmas (as we watched the original) that it shocked me no one had done a remake.

Great movie.

Robert, I'm of the opinon that movies will always be limited by their visuals in adapting books. I've seen movies that are as good as the book format but never, and will never see a movie that is better than the book.

One of my all-time-favourite movies. I've not read any of Matheson's written work maybe it's time to add some to my phone ebook software.

The fact the the adaptation's being handled by Matheson himself and his son is an indication they won't it screw it up like I am Legend was scewed up.

This is truly fantastic news! I also was thinking this movie needed a serious remake. (There was a comedy remake starring Lily Tomlin in the 80s.)

This is the third or forth time I've read this news in the past ten years. Hope it happens. Amazing story about the fragility and endurance of mankind.

I was thinking when I saw this that they should do a remake where the spider has a egg sack and it hatches...

The Incredible Shrinking Man... isn't there a pill for that now?

Yes, I know that was lame, but I said it anyway.  That's just how I roll sometimes.  (Actually, the title reminded me of the name of an episode from the British series Coupling, which is why I decided to chime in).

i remember my father telling me bout this movie when i was 8 years old. it was one of my dads fave, movie. ive seen parts but not the whole movie. i only hope they don't get the rock or some over hyped actor for this. it needs to be just as exciting as the original, with thrills and chills, not comedy or funy just a cool story ..

mellowdoux 2/14/2013 10:22:59 AM

@Zillaman... I am 42 also, so we have something in common.
Like you, I loved growing up in the 70s. This movie was one of my favs as a kid!
