Gateway drug was probably Battleship Yamato in the guise of Star Blazers on broadcast TV, though I definitely was also a fan of Robotech, Speed Racer, Marine Boy, and Ultraman...all before I had any idea really where they came from.
Okay, Ultraman and all other man-in-suit stuff was pretty obviously Japanese (and way cool), but I didn't start consuming (and buying) "anime" per se until Eva first started coming out on VHS back in the 90's. It's been all down hill ever since.
Way too much money later, and my taste isn't any more enlightened (though I watch pretty much everything and anything, with the possible exception of serious Yaoi *shudder*).
Anyway...'nuff said.
