Plan 9 From Outer Space (with Rifftrax)

Battlefield Earth. Glitter. Fantastic Four. Some films are just better with an audio commentary, especially if that commentary makes fun of the film. Luckily for the movie-renting public, the creative minds behind Mystery Science Theatre 3000 have reunited to give us the glorious gift that is Rifftrax. Currently, over fifty films (ranging from blockbusters like Jurassic Park to travesties like Roadhouse) now feature cheap, downloadable audio commentaries done by riff-master Mike Nelson. Check out his new website, www.rifftrax.com, for more details and a complete listing of all the films he’s riffing on.
One of the latest samplings from the gang at Rifftrax features Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy riffing on everyone’s favorite Ed Wood fiasco – Plan 9 From Outer Space. Add it to your Netflix queue, but make sure you get the version from Legend Films; the riff has trouble synching up with other versions of the film. Minor glitches aside, it’s hilarious.
As far as riffers go, Mike, Kevin, and Bill just can’t be beat. Some of the jokes occasionally venture into territory which might be considered questionably offensive – cracks about Bela Lugosi’s heroin addiction and Tor Johnson’s weight (though Kevin does admit that fat jokes are hitting below the belt) – but it’s still worth watching. Jokes are made about Wood’s sloppy editing (“Wait, where are we in relation to one another?”), the cheap sets (“Don’t knock over that tombstone or you’ll have to pick it up!”), and Bela Lugosi’s body-double (“I think we’ve got four Bela Lugosi’s running around this film!”), and they’re worthy of at least a chuckle if not outright laughter.
I’d recommend this to any and all MST3K fans, or anyone who’s seen Plan 9 From Outer Space without any riffing (I don’t know how you did it, truly I don’t, you deserve an award of some sort). Watch it by yourself or with a group of friends, and you’re in for an awesome time. Just ask Vampira.
