The Hulk – Issue One
Writer: Jeph Loeb ; Penciler: Ed McGuinness ; Inker: Dexter Vines
--
Roll Call: She-Hulk, Doc Samson, General Ross, Commander Hill, Iron Man, Ursa Major, Red Guardian, Crimson Dynamo, Darkstar . . . oh, and at the very end, Rick Jones and Bruce Banner

One Sentence Synopsis: A new Hulk comic starts off strong with guest stars and a nice little mystery.
--
The Meat: Doc Samson and She-Hulk are reenacting an assault by someone (Hulk-like) on the Abomination in Russia. Samson is using She-Hulk as a punching-bag prop, and She-Hulk is getting mighty annoyed with the Doc. At the end of which, to the disturbed audience of General Ross, Commander Hill and Iron Man, Samson concludes that the attacker (strong enough to beat the tar out of the Abomination) fired a gun repeatedly into and killing his target.
There is obvious tension amongst this crew of investigators, partially because She-Hulk doesn't like their “scientist” having been left behind and as such they need to bring the evidence back to base for full analysis. Before they can prep the body of Abomination for transport, however, the Winter Guard arrive. Apparently, despite Tony's controlling S.H.I.E.L.D. and he seems to have the okay from Moscow to be there, the Winter Guard are saying that they will take over the investigation. As the two sides try to work this out, Doc Samson up and slugs Red Guardian for some reason, but this only makes the Russian agent mad and a real throw-down is started. Ursa Major slice and dices She-Hulk, which makes her angry enough to strike back. Dynamo faces off against Iron Man, with poor results, and while Samson and Red Guardian are basically fight at a standstill She-Hulk is wiping the floor with the super-bear.

Ross fires his gun into the air to stop the fighting. This is when a survivor of a nearby town that was devastated during the killing of Abomination arrives. The little girl is saying, repeatedly, the word “red.”

Jump over to Alaska, and we find a half-naked Rick Jones stumbling through the snow. From an elevated position he looks down and sees crews of workers trying to contain a raging fire at a break in the oil pipeline. Rick doesn't seem to know where he is or how he got there, but is coherent enough to question what he may have done.

Back to Gamma Base in Nevada goes Doc Samson and General Ross. After passing through redundant upon redundant security measures, they arrive at a very secure cell holding their “scientist” member of their investigative team – you guessed it, Doctor Bruce Banner. Not like you didn't already know / guess that Bruce wasn't the Hulk that killed the Abomination.

All in all, a great read!

Favorite Line: “I can get paid for this kind of abuse, y'know.”

Favorite Moment: Doc Samson slugs Red Guardian, Hill face-palms and says “Oy.”

Overall Grade: A-
- A solid start with solid writing, as I've personally come to expect from Jeph Loeb. McGuiness's characters all look great, and most of his layouts are solid. There are some instances where how he paces the action on the page bothers me a little, but overall it's pretty good. All in all a great start for the Red Hulk storyline.

Damn. Sounds good. If only I hadn't just quit Marvel Comics. Looks like I'll need to follow reviews such as this to keep up on the non-Spidey related characters I love. Thanks for this and keep up the good work!

Thanks, joeybaloney.
Hulk still has the "Civil War" taint that all Marvel books have, but everytime Tony Stark is shown to be irrelevant I cheer.

I love Loeb's abd McGuinness work (especially when it is together). I'll wait for a trade though (already have to many Hulk since world war hulk (imploded).

Thanks Merin...

McGuiness (along with JR, JR after his work on WWH) might be the artist most suited to the Hulk. Thanks for the review. I'll withhold judgement until we get a bit more meat. She Hulk's line actually made me laugh out loud.

Question to anyone:

Do you understand why Doc Samson started the fight? Am I missing something?

Damn Canadian comic stores, wasn't available when I was there this week.... glad to hear it started strong. Merin, is the artwork inside the book done by the same artist who is doing the cover art? I really like his style. As to your question, hard to say, maybe Sampson has something to hide, maybe he is a Skrull, hard to tell with Marvel these days. Hey, do we think the red hulk uses a weapon, or do you think he has powers that Greenskin does not?

McGuinness is an old Superman artist, I believe, and I do think that is his work on the cover. Looks the same to me, at least, as what's inside.

Samson seems to strongly imply that "Hulk" used some kind of handgun - and the Abomination's body clearly had holes like from (I'd say bullets) some kind of blast or projectile.

If you like Hulk and/or Jeph Loeb, I'd definitely recommend this.

I just read Hulk 1 and The Incredible Herc issue, and was surprised at both. Merin, your review is pretty much dead on, and I like where its going. My favorite moment though is actualy the preview for the issue #2 cover. Looks like Stark has another beat down coming.

The herc issue (177, i think) was the one that really suprised me though. I was expecting to hate it, but got hooked right into the story, which is a continuation of WWH.

I'm also holding out to see how they handle this assinine spiderman mess before I quit that book...we'll see how it goes.

This issue was great.

I was afraid at first because Jeph Loeb can have his good days (Batman) and his bad days (Ultimates 3). The way the story is written was actually very good and fun to read. The art was excellent and it is intriguing to see who could've killed the abomination (if it is him for real of course).

The way the story is written though is a bit similar to Ultimates 3 which is a bit strange:

- both comics start in a not too distant future with an event that shatters everyone (ultimates is dealing with Tony being filmed live and Hulk deals with Abomination being dead)
- Both have someone killed and a mystery of who the killer is will need to be explained
- Both have action with someone that coems out of nowhere (Venom for Ultimates and winter Guard for Hulk)

It's just funny...maybe it's just me.
