RANT: Rivet Counting - Feb 11, 2008 - 10:31am
Rivet counting in my mind is when someone can't actually enjoy a show because they are too concerned with the meaningless menuta of things beyond their control. Take Enterprise for example. I loved the show and enjoyed it tremendously. I have friends that also enjoyed it. I've been a fan of ST since the original series when I would stay up until 11pm at nights to catch reruns. I mean come on, people complained about Enterprise for stupid reason like the theme song. The theme song was fine, it didn't have to be a variation of the old familiar ST theme. One episode of Enterprise was better than 10 episodes of Voyager combined. Enterprise was entertaining (which is the actual reason we should be watching it) and for me, didn't break canon too much. To be honest, if people would have actually watched the show instead of bitching about it, there were many departures from canon that could be explained very simply. Other things simply needed a "touch up" here and there because we have to remember, this show was based off something originally created in the 60's.

Man Could Face 3 for "24" Uploads - Jun 04, 2007 - 01:48pm
Jay-Z didn't broadcast his CD over the national airwaves for free either. Maybe select songs were on the radio, but I doubt they played the whole CD, especially nationally.

I have to agree with Merin. First off, just because something is illegal does NOT mean that it *SHOULD* be illegal. America's legal system is so fucked up now that I doubt it will ever be repaired without some kind of revolution. We only have the complacency of the people to blame though. The people stand by while big business and special interest groups push bullshit laws through. They stand by while so-called "judges" make ridiculous rulings which sets ridiculous precedents. Should there be laws that force people to pay money to non-government owned entities? There shouldn't be, but yet we have laws forcing us to carry auto insurance for example. It's a form of extortion, passed by special interest groups representing the insurance companies. Nobody forces you to drive and you do so at your own risk. If you aren't willing to take that risk, then you (should) have the option to purchase insurance or not. If I'm willing to take the risk, that should be my choice. I understand that yes, you should have to carry insurance on a bank owned car, but that should be handled with purchase contracts, not laws. I'm not sure when the government decided that it should protect every individual because they can't protect themselves but it needs to get back to the job of the day to day business of running the country and stay out of individual's lives. I still don't see how uploading previously aired episodes of shows is illegal. They were broadcast over half the continent for fucking free. It was already paid for by commercials. If you give me something for free and I decide to give it to someone else, that's not illegal. Let's be realistic here, there is such a small minority of people that would download the show, burn it to DVD, and watch it again two years from now that the whole "loss in revenue" argument just doesn't hold water. The people not buying the retail DVD because they can download the show would have never bought the DVD anyway. People buying the DVD are smart enough to know they get what they pay for vs the incomplete version that they can download.
