Bautista for Guardians of the Galaxy

The WWE Star to play Drax

By Robert T. Trate     March 14, 2013

Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) has been cast in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Now Star-Lord will have his muscle in WWE star Dave Bautista. Bautista will play none other than Drax the Destroyer.

“Bautista has been in the mix for the part since late last year, competing with actors such as Isaiah Mustafa, Patrick Wade and Jason Momoa. Momoa was pegged as the man for the gig in February by online geek blogs, prematurely it turns out”. Heat Vision (THR)

The Brief Synopsis: Guardians of the Galaxy centers on Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Pratt), a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone want.

Who is Drax the Destroyer? Here is the official biography from Marvel.com: A former saxophonist, Arthur Sampson "Art" Douglas and his family were killed by the Titanian Eternal Thanos while driving across the Mojave Desert. Kronos recovered Douglas' astral form and used it to create a superhuman warrior for the purpose of defeating Thanos. After Thanos was defeated, Drax was eventually killed by a psychic attack from Moondragon (read the complete bio at Marvel.com).

The final four main characters to be cast in Guardians of the Galaxy are:

Groot, a giant tree-man

Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered animal with a knack for guns and explosives

Gamora, the last survivor of her species who was saved by Thanos to be his assassin but now battles him

Plus the villain, Thanos, last seen in The Avengers.

Guardians of the Galaxy arrives August 1, 2014

Batista bomb!

Last time I saw Bautista, he had lost A TON of weight, he was way skinny, looked like he was down to 160, teaching MMA or something at his own gym.  I guess this means that he is willing to put the muscle back on.  I'm not worried at all by this casting, it doesn't mean GotG is going to suck.  GotG is going to suck no matter who they put in it because it's a crap idea.  How much you wanna bet they'll get Eddie Izzard (who I love) to play Rocket Raccoon?  And they're going to waste the amazing intro that Thanos got in Avengers by putting him in this turkey.  The fact they're even making this craptacular before doing projects like Dr. Strange and Black Panther (for which they still own the licenses) fills me with nerd rage.

I like it.  And I disagree with reek.  I think this will be decent.  Not as great as Cap or Iron Man, but maybe just behind Thor.  I do agree they should have done Strange and BP first or at least have them all in production at the same time.

the gotg stories from 4-5 years back were some of the best stories in comics at the time. this can be really good if given the dark edge treatment ala dark knight. although, i wonder if they'll take that approach with the comedy duo of groot and rocket raccoon.

If they keep Drax the way he's been portrait latelly, it could work very well, he hardly spoke and made some serious killing so, so far so good.

Bautista sounds like the right fit for Drax, though Mamoa woulda been good too, and I gotta disagree with reek too, on both counts.   Marvel Films has earned more than enough credit so far to not have Guardians dumped on without so much as a trailer aired yet.  And I don't know who that 160lb guy you saw was but no way was if Bautista, I don't think he's even capable of being 160 without being anorexic.

reek...Dave Bautista at 160 lbs??  I think you are confusing him with someone else.  I saw his MMA bout last October and he looked closer to 260 than 160 (anyone who saw that match knows he isn't qualified to teach MMA...it's more likely that he was taking lessons).  Bautista also just wrapped up his role in the new Riddick film which will be released this September (I don't think he's skinny in that one either).

I'm thinking this film (with Rocket Racoon and Bullwinkle...i mean Groot) will probably get the family entertainment treatment (that's where the big bucks are)...and Marvel fans like lusiphur who thought Captain America was great...will be very pleased with it.

This sucks. He hardly had any words in "Iron Fists" and he couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.  Marvel's first casting mistake.

FerretJohn 3/15/2013 1:29:06 AM

Jawbreaking, are you not familiar with Drax?  The Great Orator he is not!  He hits things, that's about it. the only one around with less verbal communication skills is the Hulk.  Dave will be fine.

Dazzler 3/15/2013 4:37:41 AM

Actually Drax was stupid when he was Hulk sized and when he slimmed down he got smart like lets say Riddick.
