It was reported long ago that the original TV Flash, John Wesley Shipp, would appear on the new Flash series running towards The CW. Who Shipp would play was kept under wraps. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Shipp will in fact be playing The Flash’s (now played by Grant Gustin) father. He will be in the premiere episode and return throughout the series.

Shipp is better known for playing James Van Der Beek’s dad on Dawson’s Creek. However, true fans of The Flash know Shipp for playing Barry Allen aka The Flash on the 1990-1991 The Flash TV Series.

"Given his history with The Flash, Andrew[Kreisberg], Geoff [Johns] and I could only think of one person we wanted to play Barry's father and that was John Wesley Shipp," said executive producer Greg Berlanti. "He gives a fantastic and emotional performance in the pilot, and we are looking forward to his presence in many more episodes."

Synopsis: The Flash centers on Central City assistant police forensic investigator Barry Allen (Gustin) who visits Starling City to look into a series of unexplained robberies that may have a connection to a tragedy in his past. Through a freak accident, he is given the power of superspeed that transforms him into the fastest man alive.

The Flash arrives on Tuesday nights, the fall on The CW.

I was hoping he was gonna be Jay Garrick... but thats still cool I guess

I was also hoping that he would play Jay Garrick, but I suppose based on the trailer it makes sense. It seems as if this rupture caused by the accident in Central City is the cause of super powered people on Earth, which means that in this DC Universe their never was a Jay Garrick Flash. However, since comic book Flash can travel between dimensions Jay Garrick Flash could still show up.

Of course this also means that Shipp should get used to wearing orange jumpsuits.

He is Dawson's dad not the Flash's!!

I still think they should make Jay Garrick a fictional character on a tv show that Barry was a fan of as a kid and maybe he and his father go trick or treating and Shipp dresses in a Golden Age Flash costume...

BunyonSnipe 5/28/2014 5:30:28 PM

I have a feeling there will be a kid called Walter West in a coma and they figure out that the chmicals in Barry's blood can save his life and it kick starts a Kid Flash storyline, which may end badly...

@BunyonSnipe, totally agree,  a Jay Garrick appearan ce would have been better than playing Bary's Dad.
